As for languages, Indonesia only recognizes one national language, Indonesian, but in reality there are an estimated 700 languages spoken in this country. Javanese, for example, is natively spoken by 98 million people, while Sundanese boasts around 42 million native speakers here. There are other languages spoken by a few million people, with hundreds more spoken by fewer and fewer numbers. Some people do speak English, but only very few. However, in all of the big cities and hubs you will find that English is spoken by a larger number of people, and those that do will be more than happy to help translate, especially in your hotel and places that tourists frequent
