Portugal

Portugal boasts a wide variety of landscapes and experiences. You can walk over its spectacular forested hills, laze on golden sands watching the Atlantic's waves roll onto the shore, or learn all about the country's fascinating heritage in its many historic towns. Whether you’re planning a budget weekend or a luxury holiday, Accor offers a full range of hotels for any type of stay.

**Lisbon**

Wander the elegant avenues of the Baixa and get lost in the age-old alleys of the Alfama. Admire the 25 de Abril Bridge from the banks of the River Tagus and the panoramic vista from atop Saint George's Castle. In the evening, be charmed by the atmosphere of the Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré neighbourhoods. Our hotels in Lisbon range from affordable havens to 5-star sanctuaries – all of them invite you to make the most of the Portuguese capital.

**Coimbra and the central region**

Coimbra is Portugal's cultural and geographical heart, and was the country's first capital city – this rich past has left it with a wealth of cultural heritage. Visit the Biblioteca Joanina, one of the world's most beautiful libraries, then explore the historical centre, terraced over Coimbra's hills. The city is home to one of Europe's oldest universities, and today Coimbra is still a major student city with a vibrant music scene and nightlife. From our city-centre hotel, you're also just an hour's train ride from Aveiro – dubbed 'the Venice of Portugal' – and an hour's drive from Nazaré, a seaside resort famous for its huge waves.

**Porto and the north**

The beautiful historic heart of Portugal's second-biggest city will enchant you, as will its nightlife and culinary specialities. Our hotels in Porto meet all your needs – they're handily located in the city centre near the metro or nestled in Vila Nova de Gaia, the neighbouring town across the Douro River that's directly linked to Porto via the magnificent Dom Luís I Bridge. So enjoy riverside strolls through the picturesque Ribeira district, wine-tasting sessions in the cellars of the best local port producers, and boat trips down the Douro Valley. Northeast of Porto, the city of Braga is more than worth seeing too. Braga is known for its religious heritage, with spectacular celebrations and remarkable monuments like the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte. What's more, the city includes a fascinating archaeological site: the remains of Roman public baths. Our hotels in Braga are ideally located and range from 2-star to 4-star properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are direct flights from many UK cities to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport and Humberto Delgado Airport – the two are connected to the Porto and Lisbon metros respectively. Faro airport is smaller but many direct flights from the UK take you there too. Once you've landed, trains and buses will get you around the country at low cost. Lisbon stands equidistant from Porto and Faro – it's the starting point of many lines of transport to reach the rest of Portugal

There's a range of climates within Portugal. The summer period is best for enjoying the seafront. If you're planning to visit the south of Portugal, it's actually better to spend time there in May or June, or in September or October. Winter temperatures stay mild from Lisbon down to the Algarve. You can go skiing in the Serra de Estrela mountain range, and you could also use this as a chance to visit Guarda – the highest city in Portugal. Guarda can be reached by train from Lisbon and is a two-hour drive from our hotels in Porto and Coimbra

Discover the Algarve from a hotel with a swimming pool near the beaches of Faro – also an ideal base for tours to Lagos or Albufeira. Near Lisbon, our hotels in Setúbal and Almada are just a stone's throw from the beaches of Caparica, Arrábida and the Tróia peninsula. Near Coimbra, you can book a room overlooking the huge beach of Figueira da Foz. And our hotels near the beaches of Vila Nova de Gaia are also close to Porto.
