A Heartbreaking Experience While Traveling with Family

I never imagined I would feel this helpless in a Novotel. I arrived at Novotel Lisbon in the evening, in the rain, traveling with my mother and aunt. We were tired after a long journey, and as family travelers, we chose Novotel because it is known as a family-friendly brand. At check-in, a simple issue — traveling with family — suddenly turned into a dramatic price increase, even higher than the hotel’s own official online price for the same room and dates. When I calmly questioned this, I was told that I could simply “leave” if I was not satisfied. Standing there at night with elderly family members, being told to leave a hotel in a foreign city, was honestly heartbreaking. It did not feel like hospitality — it felt like being pushed away when we were most vulnerable. The night became even more difficult when we later discovered that one of the rooms assigned to my family had a broken bathroom sink, making it impossible to properly wash or prepare for bed. This was only addressed after we insisted that the room was not usable, and we were moved late at night. I have stayed at many hotels under the same group across Europe, and I have never experienced such rigidity, indifference, and lack of empathy. This experience was not just inconvenient — it was emotionally exhausting. Traveling with family should feel safe and humane. Unfortunately, this stay did not make us feel welcome at all.

I was on vacation and knew the hotel, its location and facilities from a previous trip. I was shocked when I arrived as although the website said that the rooms had been renovated, there was no mention of the extent of the work still going on. I was there to relax and spend a little more time at the hotel than I normally would on a business trip. This was a bad experience. The rooms are nice, but the lack of facilities and noise was not good.

We booked here largely for the pool and gym, but turns out the pool is closed for the season which wasn’t mentioned in the reservation and none of the machines were working in the small gym. The construction was also not mentioned and we would never have booked here if we knew, we woke up every morning to construction noise, like jackhammering.. the one good thing I have to say is everyone who works here is very nice and helpful, but that’s about it.. the surrounding area isn’t very nice to walk around but it’s not too far a walk to the station to get around the city. It’s unfortunate but I would never stay here again and wouldn’t recommend it.

The staff was not very helpful and both desks were often unattended. The directions to the restaurant were no where to be found and neither was staff to direct you.
