Good but could of been better

The positives Was allocated my room early, before 10am as I paid for early check in. The reception team as always were great. The negatives: Went to bar for some snacks after catching up on sleep from a 6am flight. Bar tender was initially distracted arranging bottles, it took a few moments to get his attention. I ordered a small side salad which I wanted as an accompaniment, a tonic water, hummus and pototo crisps. I waited almost 30mins for my order. The salad was below standard that should not have been served. It consisted of lettuce, shredded carrot and not so fresh baby tomotoes covered in soy sauce. It was not a small side salad I was looking for and it was not pleasant. I did not eat much of it. Yet i was charged 8€. In the past I have ordered side salads and received better. After placing my order the bar tender Tiago went to the kitchen then returned to the computer to complete something. I had to request my drink which should of been served first. Instead almost 5-7minutes after my order was placed. Not good when you are thristy and hungry. I was then sent a complimentary drink which was a kind gesture however It consisted of dairy, compal and other ingredients. All of which I do not and cannot consume as I am dairy intolerant to milk, have sugar sensitivities to certain products and ice cold drinks which Is why I nearly always ask for my water and most drinks room temperature. Then when my order arrived the chips I asked for were fried. The ones I wanted were the packet snack which is what is usually served. When I thanked Tiago for the drink but stated I cannot drink it as I have an allergy to milk. He suggested to just tast a little. But an allergy is an allergy which you do not compromise for no one. This frustrated me and he seemed disappointed. My suggestion would be when offering a kind gesture, ask the client first so efforts are not wasted. Saturday morning breakfast was a catastrophe. Eggs were placed together next to bacon and the sausages were placed together with the vegetables. This was the first I have ever seen this. Which lacks regard for vegetarian and what about cross contamination? As a result I waited 20-30minutes for my breakfast to be made which came in 3 parts. I asked for 3 eggs scrambled some veggies. First two eggs scrambled arrived followed by the veggies 10-15mins after followed by more eggs 10mins after. I could see how busy it was but my ordered should of arrived although. An indian lady was permitted to pick up the sliced fruit with her hands on more than one occasion where crockery was provided. If I witnessed this, I do not know how the staff did not. Yet there were four people working. Another two guests were permitted to make a video call at their table which was very loud, and heard by all the other guests outside this particular group and was overbearing to all of the other guests and not acceptable. Then another who was part of the group sitting behind me was shouting over to them. This was at around 7.45am. Then the toaster set on fire. I could see the smoke happening and it was inevitable this was going to happen. Where was the four staff. While I was still eating the new staff members were come over to my table to take away plates, cups. One of which stretched over me while I was eating to do this. I had to ask on the fourth occassion to please wait until I have finished. It is unpleasant to have some over you while eating, second in the morning I need head space and do not like my personal space imposed. This is just me. Further I just prefer some uninterrupted time before I start my day. Lastly, if staff were being attentive, the fire could of been prevented albeit a very busy morning. The two regular staff were excellent as always the other two perhaps could of done with more training. On Sunday I ordered a sea bass meal before departure. I asked for Tonic water room temperature. The lady serving me said sorry I only have cold. So I looked for another drink I did not really want. 5minutes later I asked if she was sure because two days ago I was ordered two that were. She then apologised and said I am sorry were do have. Attention to detail perhaps was needed here? I must say reception staff, Renato from F&B, the cleaners are outstanding in their service and have made my stays very welcoming, warm and excellent. Although this did not change my view of the hotel overall, it did leave me feeling underwhelmed at times. But I left feeling happy and grateful for an overall good stay - clean room and comfortable room, friendly staff who I am familiar with and good energy from the majority of the staff.

One day after-cruise stay

We chose this hotel for a stay after a river cruise due to the fact that they had early check-in and late check-out. We booked on the Accor site and chose a standard room. Advance information by e-mail was good, check-in and check-out was super easy. The breakfast was good with a large choice. We also had dinner at the hotel which was not a gourmet meal - but adequate. The room on the second floor was clean, quiet - but hot and stuffy (even though we did what we could to get it cooler and fresher). The mattresses were on the hard side. The location is next to a shopping centre with a large supermarket (Auchan) and the other type of stores you find in such centres. We only spent one night - but used the day to visit World of Wine close by. Went by Bolt back and forth.

We very much appreciate your comments regarding your stay at the Mercure Porto Gaia Hotel. It is always a pleasure to receive positive feedback. I will share your comments with our team. Best regards Sérgio Bastos General Manager
