Disappointing Stay at an Overrated “4-Star” Hotel

TripAdvisor rating 1.0/5

eali2023 TripAdvisor review

I stayed at this hotel expecting a 4-star experience, but unfortunately, it felt more like a 2-star stay at most in both service and facility standards. Reception & Staff: The hotel tries to present a laid-back, modern reception style, with a desk-like table and a laptop, and another “reception” that’s just a round table surrounding a pillar — neither of which felt professional or welcoming. Throughout my stay, I interacted with four different staff members. Only Daniella stood out as warm and helpful; the others were indifferent, with no smiles or sense of hospitality. This isn’t a cultural issue either as I had a much better experience at another hotel in Portugal. Room & Facilities: The room was full of small issues that added up quickly. The air conditioning made a constant sound (just tolerable), but the fan was worse — turning it to level 2 or 3 produced an on-and-off “dididididi” noise. When I reported this, the reception told me all the rooms were the same without asking someone come to check. The shower head and tap couldn’t be used separately, and the 2-in-1 shampoo/shower gel bottle was completely empty on arrival. I asked the reception in the next morning to refill the gel and check the shower. When I returned in the evening, nothing had been done. They sent a cleaning staff member to my room to try the shower (who arrived with a cold, uninterested attitude), and when it still didn’t work, they eventually moved me to another room. It was smaller, but the shower functioned properly — although, once again, the gel bottle was still empty. A staff member later confirmed this was not normal. Also, the fan didn’t have the noise in the new room. The bed in both rooms felt loose and moved around easily, which was uncomfortable. Misleading Information: I found the staff’s communication unclear and misleading. When I asked about the water dispenser in the lobby, they said, “it’s free but there’s water in your room too,” which made it sound like the drinks in the fridge were included. Given that there was also a bottle of wine in the room clearly priced at €15, it was reasonable to assume other drinks were complimentary. Later I was told they meant there’s a kettle — not helpful. It left me feeling misled. Other Issues: • No slippers are provided unless you book the most expensive room category. • The air conditioning and fan switches are old-school — not digital. • The sink tap in the bathroom still works, but it’s loose. • The hotel is clearly in need of renovation and better quality control. • Staff do not seem to routinely check the condition of the rooms. • Cleaning staff, in particular, could use further training. Positives: The only upsides were the convenient location (right by São Bento station, with a nice view from my window), and the buffet breakfast — good environment and nice food, except for finding a cockroach on the hot dish table… Not acceptable in any setting, let alone a so-called 4-star hotel. Final Thoughts: It took me directly asking for some goodwill gesture before anyone offered anything — in the end, I was given one breakfast buffet as compensation. But overall, the experience was chaotic, uncomfortable, and nowhere near the standard one would expect from a supposed 4-star property. Would I stay again? Definitely not. The hotel needs serious improvements — in both service and maintenance — before I could recommend it to anyone.
