Embankment station is also on the fringes of Trafalgar Square, served by Bakerloo, Circle, Northern and District lines. Nelson's Column stands proudly at the centre of Trafalgar Square, a 5.5 metre granite column on an engraved bronze platform. It was erected to honour Admiral Nelson's victory in the 1895 Battle of Trafalgar. The bronze panels at its base show four of Nelson's most legendary battles.
Four giant bronze lion statues (called the Landseer Lions after artist and sculptor Edward Landseer) are perhaps the most iconic landmarks in Trafalgar Square. The famous felines took nine years to create and sit at the base of Nelson's Column.
Trafalgar Square's two fountains are adorned with oceanic sculptures, including mermaids and dolphins. The edges of the fountains are favourite meeting spots year round. Many visitors and Londoners come to sit and admire the square in all its glory.
Trafalgar Square is a relatively quick landmark to visit. Why not head into the National Gallery while you're there?
