Yes — I’d include that, but phrase “I feel we were misled into staying” rather than “tricked,” as it sounds stronger and more credible in a formal complaint. Dear Imed, I am writing to make a formal complaint regarding my recent stay at Mercure London Paddington from Friday 14th August until Monday 17th August. Unfortunately, my stay was seriously disrupted by the hotel’s lack of water, and I am extremely disappointed with the way this situation was handled. When we checked into our room on Friday, there was no water coming through. What I find particularly unacceptable is that we were not advised of this issue at check-in. Had we been told, we could have made an informed decision about whether to stay at the hotel or make alternative arrangements. Instead, we only discovered there was no water when I went to get ready for the evening. I had a booking at The Shard at 7:30pm and, because there was no water, I was unable to shower or properly get ready. This was particularly unacceptable given that London was experiencing a heatwave and the weather was extremely hot. I contacted reception to complain and, following a second call, the receptionist, offered us the use of a room at a sister hotel so that we could get ready. However, by this point it was already too late. We were already running significantly late for our booking, and travelling to another hotel simply wasn’t a practical solution at that stage. As a direct result of the water issue, I arrived more than an hour late for my booking at The Shard and was still charged for the booking. This meant that I lost money on an experience I had planned and paid for in advance, through no fault of my own. What makes this particularly frustrating is that had I been told at check-in that there was no water, I would not have checked into the hotel at all. I would have made alternative arrangements and found somewhere else to stay where I could actually shower and get ready for my evening plans. Instead, we were allowed to check in without being informed of a significant issue with one of the most basic facilities a hotel provides. As a result, I feel that we were misled into staying at the hotel, because we were not given the information we needed to make an informed decision before accepting the room. I appreciate that unexpected problems can occur and that not every issue is necessarily within the hotel’s control. However, failing to inform guests about a serious water supply problem is entirely different. The hotel had an opportunity to tell us at check-in, and had we known, we could have avoided the situation altogether. Offering a room at a sister hotel only after I had made a second complaint was unfortunately too late to rectify the damage that had already been caused. It did not resolve the fact that I had missed my booking and incurred a financial loss as a result. This completely ruined the first evening of our stay and had a significant impact on what was supposed to be an enjoyable trip to London. I would therefore like this matter to be formally investigated. I am requesting appropriate compensation for the disruption to my stay, as well as consideration of the money I lost on my Shard booking as a direct consequence of the hotel’s failure to inform us about the water issue. When we arrived the lifts were not working and we were told they soon will be so we completed the check in to find out later that it wouldn’t be fixed as there is a part needed and required shipping We were on fourth floor and had lots of luggage The staff did take luggage up but my husband and my son helped I even carried my carry on down the stairs, we just felt bad for the staff The rooms were tiny and the bathroom was not clean when we arrived
