Big Ben is the nickname given to the Great Bell of the Great Tower in the Palace of Westminster. The tower itself was renamed the 'Elizabeth Tower' in 2012 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. After the Great Fire of 1834 destroyed the Palace of Westminster, architects across the city were invited to submit new designs. Sir Charles Barry's was selected, though it didn't feature a tower. Barry turned to Augustus Pugin, who added the now famous tower to the plan in 1836. The building was designed in a Neo Gothic style and completed in 1859. It became the world's most giant and most accurate four faced striking clock, standing 316 feet (96 m) tall, and was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
