There are three sub-regions of Oceania: Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia. These do not cover Australia, although Australia is usually outlined as neighbouring and included in the Oceania region. Sydney and Melbourne are the best known, though great coastal cities are also, including the Gold Coast. Likewise, in New Zealand, a mix of capital cities like Auckland and Wellington and towns like Queenstown and Rotorua will make for a rewarding experience. If visiting Fiji, Denarau Island, and Suva are popular destinations, while in French Polynesia, Tahiti and Bora Bora are some of the better-known islands.

The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest ocean on Earth, with the most extensive array of marine life.
