We chose the Hotel Naru Seoul due to its proximity to the Han River, and its reasonable public transport options. In fact, Mapo Station, a 5 minute walk from the hotel is one stop from the All-Stop AREX station, Gongeok Station, and the bus 7016 goes to Hongdae. It of course helped that the Family Room with 2 Double Beds was available and reasonably-priced. On arriving at the hotel at 11am, after an overnight flight, it was no surprise that our room was not yet ready. I had elected not to use the online check-in as I do prefer interacting with hotel staff in person. The surprise was this information came from the staff member at the Concierge Desk (I had mistaken the Concierge Desk for the Reception, located on a higher floor). We were able to leave our luggage there and go out. When we returned, the staff member at the Concierge Desk informed me to go to the 20th floor to complete my check-in at the Reception, accessible by a pair of glass elevators which afford great views of the surrounding area on the way up. Once we had our keys, we went down to our assigned Family Room on the 3rd floor. Surprisingly, we were given a room very close to the elevator, inspite of my indicating in a survey of my preferences that I preferred a room further away from the elevator. However, as I did not hear any sounds from other rooms on the floor, this was not an issue. On entering the room and activating the room's power, the room's electrically driven curtains opened immediately, showing the view of the Han River, although the view is partly obscured by a highway viaduct. I did however the theatrical effect that this gave, and the room certainly met my expectations. The Double Beds are actually Queen-sized, and we appreciated the well-appointed room decor and the well-equipped bathroom, especially the round bathtub. The beddings are clean and comfortable. Not long afterwards, the Welcome Amenity arrived in recognition of my ALL Gold membership. It was 4 macaroons on a bed of granola, accompanied by 2 x 250ml bottles of San Pellegrino sparkling water. This was certainly the best such Welcome Amenity I had ever received. We did not book breakfast with our room, expecting to find good breakfast options around the hotel. We did have dinner at the Restaurant Voisin, where we were surprised to find that my ALL Explorer+ membership gave me 30% off the Gôut de Voisin 4-course set menu, which we certainly enjoyed, with 3 starters, a seafood course, a meat course, and a dessert and cheese bar, with coffee or tea afterwards. We were able to enjoy the same discount at the Artisan Bakery Mapo Eight, which offers a variety of baked goods as well as coffee and tea. We loved the items which we tried, a selection of croissants and buns, and with the discount, it was certainly a great deal. We did make use of both the indoor and outdoor pools. Do note that to use the indoor pool, you need to wear a swimming cap. You may elect to bring your own, or use those provided by the hotel at the swimming pool's reception. The pools are of a good size and the outdoor infinity pool has impressive views of the surroundings. Both pools were heated, given that the outside temperature was still in the L. teens. We loved the neighbourhood of Mapo, there are many local eating places ranging from food trucks to charcoal grill Korean barbecue restaurants, all within walking distance of the hotel. Mapo Station is one stop from Yeoinaru Station, which is the stop for one of the companies that operate Han River cruises. If you are interested in ice skating, the Mokdong Ice Rink is a few stops away on Subway Line 5. If you are going to Yeouido, it is a short distance away. Finally, we were treated to a beautiful sunset one of the evenings from our room, which is certainly a plus. While Mapo is not as boisterous as other areas of Seoul, its location is great for families seeking peace and quiet, or for anyone in search of inspiration from the Han River. We would certainly choose this hotel the next time we come to Korea.
