We stayed at this hotel expecting the standard of service associated with a five-star property, but unfortunately our experience fell well short of those expectations. As an Accor member, I had booked an Executive King Room and, upon arrival, requested a complimentary upgrade if one was available. The receptionist repeatedly assured us that we had been upgraded to the next room category. However, it later became clear that we had, in fact, been allocated the room category we had originally booked. This was particularly disappointing, as we expected the information provided to us to be accurate. Upon arrival, we also requested a quiet room away from the lifts, as we were travelling with our child. We were initially allocated a room directly beside the lift on the seventh floor. We returned to Reception and politely explained that this was exactly what we had hoped to avoid. We were then allocated a different room on the fourth floor, only to find that it too was directly beside the lift. After two trips up and down with our luggage and a tired child following a long flight, this was extremely frustrating. We asked to speak with the Duty Manager. Instead, after waiting for around 30 minutes, a Housekeeping Supervisor came to speak with us. It was only after requesting the Duty Manager again that they came to assist us. Once involved, the Duty Manager dealt with the situation professionally and resolved the matter, for which we were grateful. The highlights of our stay were the beautiful lobby, the lovely housekeeping staff and the large windows in the rooms. The mattress was softer than we personally prefer, but it was clearly of good quality and this is simply a matter of personal preference. Unfortunately, there were several maintenance issues. The bathroom had a persistent plumbing odour throughout our stay. The corridors also smelled musty and of an ageing building, and this appeared to be masked with an extremely strong fragrance diffuser. The scent was overpowering and even drifted into the room, making it rather unpleasant. The air conditioning units also seemed very dated and were exceptionally noisy. The airflow was directed straight onto the bed and adjusting the vent made little difference. We ended up switching the air conditioning off overnight because we did not want cold air blowing directly onto our child while sleeping. Overall, this was not the five-star experience we had anticipated. Our greatest disappointment was the service we received at Reception. We felt that our requests were not taken seriously, and we were repeatedly given information that turned out to be incorrect. A more attentive, transparent and customer-focused approach would have made a significant difference to our stay.
