Great Location and Helpful Friendly Staff but Lacking Finesse

The hotel is in a very good location for access to the old port area and the hotel staff you could not fault with excellent personal service from everyone we spoke to. We were advised before we arrived that the lift would be out of service during our stay but when we arrived it was working in its own quirky way. The lift is very old, and small, and you could be polite about it by calling it a “collector’s item”. It makes loud clanking noises as it operates. It unfortunately seems to be prone to failure which it did on our first morning and so we had to go up and down the stairs until it was fixed later that day (we were on the 7th floor and are both in our 70s, one of us with knees that protest at stairs). It’s also prone to misuse and there are clear signs in French and English explaining exactly how to operate the lift, a vital step being to ensure that the two wooden doors are closed, on exiting the lift. Unfortunately this crucial factor is overlooked very often, leaving the lift stranded wherever the mistake was made, requiring the hotel staff to intervene when they realise something is amiss, and leaving customers without a lift in the meantime. As the details of the operation of the lift are so important you would think that all customers would be given something in writing in their own language when they checked in. Better still a new lift! The room was clean and normal Ibis proportions though only two coat hangers were provided. There was a bath with a shower but no curtain or screen which was strange. There was no non-slip surface to stand on in the bath, and nothing to hold on to when stepping in or out. The whole arrangement was very slippery and dangerous and rendered the shower unusable as a shower. Breakfast was up to normal Ibis standards and quite adequate to set you up for the day. We arrived without realising it on the same day as the Olympic Flame arrived in Marseille from Greece. All the roads around the hotel were closed for the festivities and we were unable to get a taxi from the station to the hotel or anywhere near it. So we had to walk with our bags from the station; it would have been helpful to have been warned about this beforehand. Luckily it’s all downhill from the station.
