Good location but there are issues

The hotel in many ways is great. The location is very good for me and what I like in Singapore as I frequent Fort Canning Park and have a lot of business within 10 minutes of the hotel. The rooms are fine and larger than some other hotels in Singapore. There is self-service laundry on site that is reasonably priced. In many ways, I really like it. However, I don't think I will stay again for the following reasons. First, this is the worst gym I have ever experienced in Singapore, including at hotels with much lower price points. I know the gym can't be expanded, but there is a lot of space on the same floor outdoors near the pool. I know of multiple hotels in Singapore, including one exactly a block away, that have a gym AND additional equipment outdoors. Mercure could easily do this and it would make a world of difference. The gym right now is poor by any standards, and embarrassing in Singapore where most hotels have amazing gyms. I have even stayed in hotels in Singapore with "Express" in the name that have far superior gyms. Surely a hotel of this calibre should have better facilities. Second, the hotel still looks great, but there are some issues with maintenance, which is also unusual in Singapore. The USB charger near my bed didn't work, plastic pieces from the railing were falling off the curtains in my room, the toilet paper dispenser fell off the wall onto the floor because it was loose, the sink drain plug in my room didn't work and was missing the handle, etc. There were quite a few things that needed a little bit of care. Last, the lounge is extremely confusing. There is no staff inside, but on some nights someone would come in to check guest room numbers and occasionally provide some service. Considering you have to use your room card to get in, not sure I understand the purpose of checking rooms. But the real issue is with the service. Because there is no one in there, no one is clearing plates. The first night I was in there, guests were piling plates on the desk near the door. It was a mess. And on other nights when the staff did pop in slightly more frequently, it still isn't often enough to clear plates promptly and there is no tray or anything set up for guests to put them on when finished. It was really awkward, especially considering the size of the tables. You run out of space VERY quickly. In addition to the service, the lounge offering is also the worst I have seen in Singapore. There are three things on offer nightly and even on my short stay, they started to repeat. There was no salad or vegetables, no cheese plate, no fruit. It was three chaffing dishes that usually had no rhyme or reason to be served together. I am usually extremely flexible on lounge food offerings and will take whatever is served because to me it is a free dinner. This is one of the very rare times when I had to go outside for dinner while staying at a hotel with a lounge. I typically don't name other hotels, but since it is in the same family, Mercure on Stevens has a gym that is 4-5 times the size of the gym at this location and the lounge is a world apart as well. I don't want it to sound like it is a terrible experience to stay here. In many ways, it is quite pleasant as I said about the location and rooms other than some maintenance issues. If you don't use the gym or lounge, it is a decent hotel. But both of those things are important to me and there are a lot of better options in Singapore. Therefore, it is not for me.

We weren’t happy that the check-in offer of an “upgrade” to a Loft Room was made to us. As a couple in our mid 70’s getting up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet becomes a fall risk if we have to get out of a loft bed and go down and up stairs. This is in sensitive on your part. We would have accepted a King bed corner room if one had been offered so settled for no “upgrade” at all and had a standard pokey room. One more thing - the Royalty Restaurant for breakfast is just too cold! Try it at 20C instead of 16 or less. We had to put on an extra layer to sit there and eat. I doubt that we will return.
