Well-Located Hotel with Modern Comforts

We stayed two nights at the Balthazar Hotel while visiting Brittany and found it conveniently located—about a 10-minute walk from the train station, easy walk even with an overnight bag. We appreciated the early check-in, and our room was spacious, complete with a patio and all the amenities you’d expect from a 4–5-star hotel, including a Nespresso machine. The only drawback was the oddly designed bathroom: the toilet room, shower, and main bathroom all had glass doors that opened in awkward ways, making the layout impractical.

I’ve stayed at the Balthazar in Rennes multiple times, and it remains one of my favorite options in the city. The location is excellent—right in the center of the downtown area. The food is consistently great, the rooms are beautifully decorated and thoughtfully designed, and the lobby has a warm atmosphere. There’s also a spa if you have time to unwind and a small gym for quick workouts. It’s pricier than many other hotels in Rennes, but if you value comfort, quality, and a relaxing atmosphere after a long day, it’s absolutely worth the premium.

Generally a good experience - the room was comfortable but no explanations about how to use the tv, which was only in French. Most TVs today allow you to watch films in VO. You have canal+ and Disney but there was no explanation of how to see these films in English. There were too many people in the "parcours sensorielle" so that was a bit overwhelming. The spa experience was magic - a real pleasure, the staff at reception were really helpful and the late check-out after the spa treatment was very much appreciated, I had time to go back to my room and get dressed and leave. The breakfast was really nice - good choice and quality products, nicely presented but one member of staff was not particularly friendly and they should come back and ask if you want to order something else e.g. pancakes - you might want them after your eggs and not at the same time.

The staff were lovely and attentive throughout our stay, and the room was cosy, clean, and comfortable, everything you’d hope for in a relaxing break. Unfortunately, our departure day was a bit of a letdown. The breakfast service appeared to be overwhelmed by the number of guests, resulting in a 40-minute wait for an omelette, which then arrived incorrect. It was a disappointing end to what had otherwise been an excellent stay. Prior to that, I would have happily rated the experience a 10 out of 10.
