Not worth the money

My girlfriend and I visit Paris every year to attend a memorial service and we usually stay in an Ibis hotel which is great. This year we decided we would spend some more money and stay at the Mercure, believing it would be a better experience to go with the price. Overall, our stay was a bit disappointing, especially for the extra money. The rooms were much smaller and not as nice as our usual Ibis (located nearby) hotel, with fewer amenities, so it is not really clear what we were paying extra for. A dirty cleaning cloth was left in our room by the cleaners when they came to make up the room (not a huge issue, but still detracted from the experience). But the real issue, apart from the price, was during breakfast on the first day. I was eating a sandwich I had made with the continental breakfast offering and one of the staff members came over to sternly tell me that it is forbidden to take food from the breakfast buffet to eat off-site. I had no intention to do so, and had given no indication that I would, so to be scolded and spoken to like I was a naughty child for no good reason left a bitter taste. This rounded off a disappointing experience which was a shame because otherwise the staff were friendly and helpful.
