The location of Le Royal Hotel Lyon is perfect, and this was one of the main reasons we chose the hotel. We also chose it because it is an Accor 5-star hotel, and Accor is our preferred hotel group. Unfortunately, our experience was very far from what we would expect from a 5-star MGallery property. There are some positives. The staff were consistently kind, courteous and helpful throughout our stay. The beds were also extremely comfortable, with lovely bed linen. Unfortunately, that is where the positives ended. Our first room was immediately disappointing. There was a strong and unpleasant odour, which smelled of leather or animals, despite there being no leather in the room. The carpet was extremely worn, with holes in several places, the furniture was chipped, and the air conditioning was very noisy. The bathroom was particularly shocking. The toilet was so high that your feet did not touch the floor when seated. The sink was cracked, and, worst of all, the grout around the bath was covered with drilled holes and mould. The shower was not a proper shower cubicle but was situated in the old, stained bathtub. I have never experienced bathroom conditions like this in a hotel presented as a 5-star property. We complained to reception and were told that they could not change our room until the following day, so we had no choice but to stay in the room for another night. The following day, the hotel did move us and kindly upgraded our room. They also left an apology note, chocolates, juice and a small bouquet, which was a thoughtful gesture and appreciated. Unfortunately, the second room also had significant problems. The bathroom was more modern and had a proper shower cubicle, although the handheld shower head needed attention. The bathroom was wallpapered, with unsightly tears in several places. I also question the suitability and hygiene of wallpaper in a bathroom, particularly around the toilet area. Most concerningly, the second room smelled even worse than the first. This time, there was a very strong smell of something resembling an electrical burn, like the smell of a Scalextric set overheating, for those who remember them. The smell gave me headaches throughout our stay. Having already complained once and been moved, I felt uncomfortable raising another complaint, but it significantly affected our enjoyment of the stay. There was one final incident that really summed up our experience. The hotel had kindly agreed to a late checkout. Before leaving for our flight, we left our luggage at the hotel and went for lunch. When we returned, we needed to use the bathroom before our taxi arrived. There are no proper public toilets in the reception area, so we were given a key to room 212, apparently a small shower room/toilet for this purpose. As a woman, I was already uncomfortable to find the toilet seat left up. What I found considerably more disturbing, however, was blood on the wall. At that point, my concern was no longer simply about the dated décor or maintenance issues. It raised serious questions about housekeeping and hygiene standards. I want to stress that the staff themselves were consistently pleasant and courteous, and I appreciated the efforts made after our initial complaint, particularly the room change and apology. However, kindness from the staff cannot compensate for the condition and cleanliness issues we experienced. We chose this hotel because we trusted the Accor brand and expected the standards associated with a 5-star MGallery property. Sadly, our experience did not come close to those expectations. For us, the perfect location and comfortable beds were nowhere near enough to overcome the maintenance, odour and, most importantly, hygiene problems we encountered. A very disappointing stay, and certainly not what we expected from a 5-star Accor hotel.

I had a wonderful experience at this hotel and highly recommend it. Prime Location: Situated right in the heart of everything, making it incredibly easy to walk to major attractions and restaurants. Attentive Staff: The team went above and beyond from check-in to check-out, providing warm and professional service. Cosy Room: The room was clean, beautifully designed, and felt like a perfect retreat. The bed was exceptionally comfortable. I will definitely stay here again!

Reception staff and concierge were excellent. Housekeeping staff not great, rooms cleaned very late during the day and were not done when we came back from our day out. Member of housekeeping staff still in our room. Coffee and water not replaced. Turndown at 5.30 pm one evening, member just knocked and handed in a piece on chocolate. Housekeeping staff entered our room three times on morning of our departure without knocking. This is not professional. Checkout is at 12 noon, this was well before that time. The hotel is very dated. There is no area for guests to sit and relax other than bar which is not suitable unless you are having a drink, or the two seats in reception which is not suitable either, there should be a guest lounge. There is also no toilets available for guests in the hotel other than their bedroom. I think the general experience was poor for a five star hotel.

The Hotel overlooks a magnificent square in the heart of Lyon’s island. It’s got fantastic character and our room was superb. We didn’t have an evening meal at the hotel but the breakfasts were excellent and set us up for the day. Only one minor complaint - the bar is incredibly (stupidly) expensive so we spent little time there, and when we did it was empty, which is a shame as we like a nightcap or two. Finally all of the staff we came in contact with were incredibly polite and helpful. What a great place.

We stayed at this beautiful hotel for four nights, but we visited Leon. It's centrally located on the Peninsula between the two rivers. Walking out the front door and across the street to the right is a role of wonderful restaurants, including the renowned Le Sud Bacuse. The old town is a short walk.

This was my first time visiting Lyon. The hotel was so close to the metro which is important to me as I enjoy using local public transportation. It is also a good walking distance to Old Lyon. I said in one of the red rooms and it was such a nice room. I liked that I had a balcony, it was just too hot to enjoy. However I did appreciate that I could not hear the traffic. I enjoyed the amenities that was provided in the room. Having two bottles of water(still & sparkling) was great to have. I also liked the slippers, I took a pair and will be keeping them in my luggage as my travel slippers. The staff was so nice and friendly. I will definitely be staying at this hotel again.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The location was perfect for exploring the area, and the property itself was charming, comfortable, and full of character. What made the biggest impression was the outstanding service: everyone was genuinely friendly, attentive, and always willing to help. I felt well taken care of from check-in to departure. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again and would gladly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
