I stayed at the ibis Coventry hotel last week for what felt less like a hotel visit and more like an audition for a low-budget survival documentary. Let’s start with the ambience. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to live inside a shadow, this is your place. The room was impressively dark — not “cosy winter evening” dark, but “did the electricity company cut the power?” dark. Even during the daytime, the single, solitary window seemed to be doing the absolute bare minimum. I’ve seen larger windows on garden sheds. Temperature-wise, the room embraced a bold “Arctic chic” theme. It was consistently cold — refreshing if you’re storing dairy products, less ideal if you’re a human being trying to sleep. The bathroom door deserves its own paragraph. I can only assume it was sourced from a decommissioned prison. It had that sturdy, institutional vibe — the kind of door that makes you feel like you should be requesting yard time instead of a towel. Now, onto the mattress — or more specifically, half of it. One side appeared to have given up on life entirely and was effectively broken in half. Sleeping on it felt like participating in a gentle but persistent trust fall. Every time I rolled over, it was a gamble. To be fair, the staff were polite, and the location is convenient. But if you’re seeking warmth, light, or a mattress with structural integrity, you may want to pack a torch, an electric blanket, and perhaps a plank of wood — just in case. Would I stay again? Only if I needed to train for an expedition to the North Pole. ⭐⭐ (Two stars — one for location, one for character-building.)
