I have been here several times over the past few years and have always had a nice stay. Only negative i would say is that the room we stayed in could do with a lick of paint, especially the bathroom.Room 117.But staff arre all lovely and breakfast is very good also.

No-one warned us the Hotel was in wind down prior to its refurb. I booked 3 rooms for us as a family to celebrate my son's 21st, and it was not a cheap rate. We have loved the Shakespeare for many years, and we would have chosen to stay there anyway, but we should definitively been told about the winddown and offered a reduced rate. I think you missed a huge opportunity to engage with past patrons of the Shakespeare. It took us 24 hours to realise what on earth was happening, threadbare carpets, taps that don't work properly, dark public rooms, not fires, no ambiance, bar shut all day til 5, it was just so disappointing. I wonder why you didn't have leaflets in the rooms telling guests about the exciting plans and the plans could also have been displayed in the foyer or the bar for guests to peruse. I will be emailing about all this as I'm not sure if Mercure actually do pick up these messages.

The hotel was clean, tidy and the professional staff. There was a problem with insufficient hot water but it didn't really affect our stay. The bedroom and bed were very comfortable and we had the extra luxury of the clocks going back which we thoroughly enjoyed for the extra sleep.

Had a fabulous time. Located in the middle of everything. Lovely big room with a massive bed and living room area with a TV. Hotel was beautiful. Did have creeky floorboards in our room but it is an old historical building. Didn't bother us as we was out all day. Breakfast was lovely and fresh. Staff was friendly and helpful. Only negative I have to say is parking is £15. For a large hotel they have a very small carpark
