My young son and I travelled to Paris for an important youth conference. I did not want to stay at the Mercure and I now certainly wished I had not! During our stay the staff and team of the Mercure Gare de Lyon showed an utterly lack of care for visitors. Two incidents illustrate the lack of grace and sensitivity of the staff at Mercure Gare de Lyon. 1.) On the evening of Friday, 6th March, we returned to the hotel, following an event at the Eiffel Tower, and I became seriously unwell. I suffered from a severe case of food poisoning and was sick throughout the night. We were due to check out the Mercure the following day. I asked if we could kindly be granted a late departure (1 hour max) in lieu of the fact that I was very unwell and travelling alone, with a child. There was no grace or compassion on the part of the Mercure staff. They denied my request initially; then, followed up later to offer us a late departure - at the cost of 50 EUROS. I understand that ACCOR are in business to make a profit - but surely a little human compassion is worth something? Especially when it comes to encouraging customer loyalty. Sadly, our experience with the MERCURE GARE DE LYON only got worse. 2.) In the rush to vacant our room at the appointed time, whilst still feeling deeply unwell, I left a bag in our room. This bag contained all of our Paris souvenirs, plus inside that bag was a personal cloth bag which held a knitting project that I have worked on for several months. While these items may be of little value to anyone else - they are greatly important us. Again, a need for grace and compassion on then part of Mercure staff. And, here, again, they failed. The kind staff at NOVOTEL GARE DE LYON contacted the staff at MERCURE GARE DE LYON as soon as we reported the bag had been left. The staff at MERCURE made minimal effort to find the bag. I walked back to Mercure this morning, in person before catching our Eurostar departure. I was told that the cleaning operative had cleared our room and thrown our items away. That nothing could be done. I offered to look through the rubbish myself to search for our items. I offered to pay to do this. The staff took my name and email, but it was clear to me that the matter was closed for them. I will never set foot in another Mercure hôtel. And will advise everyone I know to the same.

Traveling while sick, especially with a child, is understandably a very difficult situation and we hope that you are now feeling better. Regarding your request for a late check-out, we would like to clarify your request was initially made through the Accor customer support service and not directly with our reception team. The message from the support service was received and read by our front office team around noon, at which time you were immediately contacted by our team in your room. A late check-out was then granted. We regret that this timing did not correspond to your expectations; however, the delay was linked to the time at which the request reached the hotel team. Concerning the bag left in the room, we fully understand the sentimental value that these items may represent. After your departure, our housekeeping cleaned the room and the plastic bag could have been mistaken for rubbish and disposed of during the cleaning process. As soon as we were informed, our team began searching the waste disposal area in an attempt to recover the bag. Despite these efforts, we have not yet been able to locate it. Please be assured that we are continuing to investigate and will contact you immediately should the bag be found. For safety and hygiene reasons, it is unfortunately not possible to allow guests to access or search through the hotel’s waste disposal areas themselves. We nevertheless understand your request and regret that the situation led to such disappointment. We are truly sorry that your experience left you with such a negative impression, as this is not the level of service we aim to provide to our guests. EVERYONE was friendly. Excellent front desk staff. Ample room size for Paris. Super comfortable bed. Great location for traveling around Paris. Connected to Gare de Lyon off of Hall 1. Plenty of restaurants to walk to also. Really important was that you could not hear the guests in the other rooms The rooms have no air conditioning so it was a little hot but our window did open and that let in some breeze. Would DEFINITELY stay again.
