Knowing Switzerland is an expensive place to visit I guess we expected more from the Ibis Brand on staying at the Ibis Centra Gare Geneva. The location is ok, it is on the opposite side of the railway tracks to most other hotels and city centre, but only just, the railway viaduct runs behind the hotel and less than ten-minute walk to the main station. The hotel room was tiny, the smallest hotel on our trip, not much bigger than a standard overnight ferry cabin. The bathroom felt like the size an aircraft toilet. The bed was comfortable, and room was warm which was good as it was 1 degree outside. The only power sockets in the room was an odd power strip hardwired into a desk under the window, this also had a couple of USB points on it. We only paid for one breakfast on our last morning luckily, This “buffet” breakfast for $33 AUD each was the worst hotel breakfast we have ever had. On arrival in the breakfast room there was no, cereal bowls, no plates, no orange juice, no bread for toast. Rather sad looking congealed scrambled eggs. The coffee mug was cracked, when bowls did turn up from the kitchen they were chipped, and no matter how many times I tried to get cold milk from the machine it was always heated milk, not very nice on cornflakes. The staff seemed to bicker with each other constantly. Having stayed in an Ibis hotel earlier on the same trip I expected more from this hotel, and I feel Ibis should examine the use of the Ibis name on this property.

Pretty much any all shortcomings of this hotel are more cultural and I get that. I'll give an example .. we recently stayed in a hotel in the western US that was similarly stylish as the Ibis, a mid century modern renovation had been done on what would be by US standards an old property, 50-60yrs. The hallways were wide, the room like twice the size of the Ibis, the bed a comfortable king, a refrigerator, microwave, thicker more plentiful towels, massive guest ice machine about 50 ft away, total climate control, large TV with 2 HBOs, an excellent breakfast of eggs, sausages, bacon, cottage fries, make your own waffles, fresh fruit and a lot of other stuff. The room, halls, lobby and large dining area were all spotless, staff were friendly. Cost: $59 US or 53CF per night The issues I felt were not cultural at the Geneva Ibis were the fact that it was hot in my room and I couldn't turn on the air .. apparently "it is winter" .. the desk agent brought me a fan. The other was that the USB outlets throughout the room were worn out an could not make a connection. The shower floor was dangerous slick with an unexpected drop down mid way. Breakfast was okay but I've never seen cereal served without milk and we found it a bit odd that there were no serving utensils with the eggs and weiners(?). We found the property clean and housekeeping did a good job with daily care. The staff were by and large pleasant.

My stay at the hotel was a nightmare from start to finish. The room was dirty, with stained sheets and a musty odor that never dissipated. The air conditioning barely worked, leaving me sweating through the night, and the noise from the street and neighboring rooms made it impossible to sleep. The staff was indifferent to my complaints, offering no solutions or apologies. To top it off, the food at the restaurant was overpriced and inedible, leaving me feeling utterly disappointed and counting the hours until I could leave.
