I paid Eur 500 for a room overlooking the back of the building, where there were nothing but black-out curtains, ie they had to be drawn all the time. 500 euros to be in a basement-like room. An absolute disgrace!!

Overpriced but great location

We booked last minute during the Rugby World Cup, so paid an extremely high rate. Comments below would be fed back regardless of price, but having paid such a high rate, it was particularly challenging to accept the faults. Positives: - Location and views of the Vieux Port - Savory food was good quality in Le Carre Bistro. See below on poor breakfast and desserts. - Friendly and helpful staff who spoke excellent English. - Complimentary wine at check in was a nice touch. Areas for improvement: - Room 239 felt cramped in places. Room decor was dated and showing its age (e.g. stains on wallpaper). Chair was extremely uncomfortable. Some minor mould on shower tiles. Wiring in a box on outside of wall was unexpected for a 5 star hotel. - Mosquitoes were a problem. Despite keeping the door to our terrace closed at all times, there were several mosquitoes in the room at any given time. The corridor had several mosquitoes too so possible they got in when the room was being cleaned. Some form of repellent needed as we were badly bitten. - Pool shared with neighbouring Novotel was very busy - a 5 star hotel should really have its own pool. - Breakfast was dreadful. For €31 per person the quality was poor and service was terrible. My second coffee never materialised. My husband waited ages for scrambled eggs and no bacon was available. Baguette ran out. No offer to order a la carte items. It was busy when we had breakfast (no seats available on the terrace) but I basically had bread and butter and one small coffee for €31 so very poor value. - Quality if desserts at the bistro was also poor. Affogato was inedible and we witnessed other tables send this back. - Concierge was friendly and helpful but did not appear confident in recommending things to see and do and was unable to help us make a reservation for a boat trip. - No recognition of being a travel agent and no perks offered despite booking through the Accor Travel Professionals website using STAR codes (no discount available on room rate due to low availability and late booking date).

When I get a $800 per night hotel room; I expect a shower that is not impossible to be closed after using (the room service rather than have it fixed tightens the tap to a point you need brute force fo open); dripping all day and night makjng an annoying sound. Then the room servuce is terribel, the dinner I ordered had a broken glass in the mashed potatoe (let management know already). It could have been really serious as the size of the broken glass could have really hurt my throat or internal organs. Finally, for a five start hotel; the night menu is attrocious. It can offwr a salad that can be premade or some pasta dish that just requires heating. Overall, I am not inpressed with Sofitel.
