We won’t be going back …

dwoo811 TripAdvisor review

Our second time of visiting this stunning hotel but this time around was so very different from our previous stay, we definitely won’t be going back! The Good ~ it’s clean, it’s friendly, the staff work hard to please, especially Jimmy in the lounge, Isuru our Butler & Melina was there to greet us as we arrived & came to see us as we checked out too which was very kind of her, The Bad ~ as returning guests to the hotel it was a little disappointing that our Platinum Membership, our loyalty to the group, counts for absolutely nothing, our room wasn’t ready upon our mid morning arrival to the hotel & although we know that check in states 3pm, it was awful just sitting around waiting to get into our room, up and down to the check in desk all afternoon then getting our keys just before 5pm, our holiday didn’t get off to a good start ! It cost us around £1300 + per night, and we stayed for their minimum of 6 nights from the Boxing Day, so not cheap, yet our room was the same style room as we had before, the only thing that changed was the view from the balcony this time around, we had a palm view but again with a bit more care and attention, for the size of the hotel & the different room types, you’d of thought we would of been given a different style of room than our previous stay, a chance to charm us, but no such luck, we asked for a duplex room which was the same rate but our request was ignored & when we questioned it, no other rooms were available during our 6 night stay ! The room was cold & we waited until past 7pm for the extra rollaway bed to arrive, we had to chase this up ourselves with several calls. Although there was 3 of us staying in the one room, as booked and paid for, our room was only furnished with the usual extras for 2 people, a clear lack of communication to cause us to make more calls for extra towels etc, the complementary’s always for 2, the hotel sent us up a bottle of Prosecco for NYE which was a lovely gesture but it came without glasses ? The club lounge this time around was super super busy, and although the staff were very friendly, they honestly couldn’t offer their usual first class service nor standards as they were so stretched, they were rushing around trying their level best to keep up at times. The service was so much slower, we were constantly asking for bowls, plates, cutlery & drinks took an age at times too. On day two, we were starting to settle in and decided that before we headed out to the mall we would call into the lounge at 5pm for a quick visit with our Son, it was his first time in the lounge, when we got there, the staff were stood around chatting amongst themselves, it was fairly quiet, and we ordered 3 soft drinks, I didn’t want anything to eat, our Son walked over to the buffet table and a staff member proceeded to follow him and quietly told him that his footwear was inappropriate for the lounge which is fair enough, he had a pair of designer flip flops on & of course we know how to dress but we had walked past at least 2 of the Management team who greeted us, and as mentioned by other guests, this lounge hasn’t seen investment for a long while, it’s certainly no five star luxury establishment that qualifies anyone being suited and booted, there are no signs up anywhere about dress code or attire, I just felt it was totally unnecessary for a waiter to let my Son know at the Buffett table that he wasn’t dressed properly as his footwear was ‘ inappropriate’ to eat a lite bite at 5pm, so much so, we left the lounge immediately, disappointed, upset and went back to our room instead, needless to say, our Son didn’t want to return to the lounge for the entire stay which was so upsetting for us, we couldn’t enjoy the lounge as a family, enjoying the benefits of what we had paid for, we all felt that the situation could of been delivered to us better than it was, a quiet word on our way out as we were leaving, or a member of the management team pulling us to one side, a note under our door, the approach just wasn’t right and instead of delighting us, it ruined our night and our stay because we let it !!

Excellent

This was our third stay at Raffles the Palm and, if possible, it was even better than our other stays. We tried an, allegedly, more exclusive hotel nearby and found it sadly lacking I'm terms of attentiveness and friendliness of service. What sets this hotel apart is personal service. Our preferences were remembered and the staff were beyond welcoming to us and our children. Isuru, who has become a friend, is the most wonderful person. He is a senior butler at the hotel and ridiculously good at his job. He thought of things we may like or enjoy, far before we did and arranged things for us. He checked in on us and the kids and made the kids feel like they were super special. He arrived just before the gala dinner ( wow, what an event) and whisked my dress away to be pressed, at his insistence. He made sure to come and say goodbye to us. Also, after meeting him on our first and second visits, he knew we were visiting Sri Lanka which is his home country. He ensured someone he knew checked on us in our hotel there and advised on food options for my husband who has a severe allergy. Utter gentleman. Our suite was stunning. The palm views were amazing. The suite itself, Premier 1 bedroom jacuzzi, was huge. Lots of space for a family of 4. It is opulent in a fabulous way. The club lounge is probably one of my favourite reasons to stay at Raffles. Well, that and the Japanese restaurant. The head chef Rahmi is amazing. He is incredibly allergy conscious which is so important. He was great making recommendations and even checked on my husband at the gala dinner to make sure he had sufficient very good food options. He is super friendly and an excellent chef. He runs his kitchen very well. The staff on the club are amazing. Moh Moh, Paul, Cherith, Sheikh and the others are great. As is the charming Pakistani older gentleman who's name I do not know. They all remember favourite drinks etc and my son loves that the sea him and bring him Palm Breezes. Those people in particular take such an interest in what we are doing and making sure we have fun. Finally, Sheehan in the Japanese is still adored by my family. Soooo good at his job. Recommends things, great with kids and also recommended things to use when in Sri Lanka. The gala dinner was exceptional. The food was of a very high quality. Think cavier, grilled huge seafood sections, v v good meats and Japanese foods etc. The band was great as was the DJ and acrobats. The hotel had the best view if multiple fireworks however. Out of this world. The management, in particular Melina, made us feel like old friends returning home. Her greeting was so genuine and warm. The watersports team on the beach, linked to the hotel are super friendly and v v v good with kids too.

A Great Hotel.
