I visited with my mother who has Alzheimer’s mid to late stage her mobility is limited. Upon arrival after a 5 hour journey we were greeted by Stef. I sat my mother in reception whilst gathering our bags and then to park the car. The room allocated to us I was told was an accessible room with lots of space, I explained that wasn’t a priority for me all that mattered was that there be a walk in /on shower , not a shower over a bath because of my mothers poor mobility. I then learnt that all the accessible rooms have showers over a bath. This is not what I expected at all of an accessible room. I’d specifically requested weeks before when booking that we would need a shower only NOT A SHOWER OVER A BATH. Also that it would be difficult for us accessing a room on an upper floor without use of a lift. Stef found us another room. ROOM 517 . I had to manoeuvre my mother’s wheelchair through 4 sets of double doors , doors that you had to pull towards you that did not stay open , this was a struggle and exhausting. A member of staff helped us in with our luggage. After staff member had left I looked over the shower to check how it worked only to find that the temperature could not be regulated at all and the water was coming out very hot , too hot to shower with. I felt very let down and disappointed. I called reception twice no answer to see if someone could come to our room to check if it was just me not using the taps correctly and to save me having to push my mother in her wheelchair back through the 4 sets of double doors along the lengthy corridor back to reception to report the shower problem. I had decided to go out for a few hours so did so on our way out. I was told no maintenance was around so if it was faulty we could have another room. ROOM 701 I said ok fine but I really didn’t want to have to move all the luggage again. Stef said she would manage that if I didn’t mind her doing so. Upon our return near 10pm I was told that she’d been too busy and that the luggage was still in old room. A member of the night staff ALY was designated to help ME with the task of moving again. I had to leave my mother unattended in the new room whilst we left to retrieve the baggage from the other which overall was exhausting . The room was super HOT I asked ALY if there was a thermostat on the wall where we could turn the heating down if needed. She said there wasn’t one and proceeded to look for the regulator on the radiator. She appeared to be trying to turn something and said it should cool down as she left. The radiator was still hot after 15 -20 mins so I opened the window and looked for the regulator she was attempting to turn. She had not turned it off at all , she had try to turn the grey cap to the left of radiator the actual control I found out was on the right side of the radiator. We had a chat on the way to the room and she disclosed to me she’d already been working at the hotel for a year and a half . Please someone show her how to use the equipment in the rooms . That said , I did not know how the light worked over the bed but she did help me with that. Basically , I booked to stay at the Mercure over staying at a Travelodge or Premier Inn because I thought we would have a more comfortable stay. Our stay wasn’t quite the restful experience I’d expected from a **** star hotel. The cooked breakfast was very underwhelming. Undercooked tomatoes , overcooked mushrooms fried eggs like rubber . Did not like seeing upturned cups sat directly on table surfaces , where damp cloths had been used sparingly and to flick away the previous sitters breakfast remnants. Male bar tender was very leisurely with his service he was very chatty and smiley serving one couple. I stood waiting to receive some acknowledgment that I would be served next but he did so only after leaving the bar area and on his return . I felt like I was invisible, worse still that after waiting patiently I wasn’t going to get that longed for nite cap I’d been looking forward to all day. All turned out ok in the end tho.

Let me get the negatives out of the way. No lifts working over the 1.5 days we stayed. Not great when moving luggage and wedding gear up 3 flights of stairs many times. We opened the bathroom tap, black bits came out before the water cleared. Not good. The positives: when these defects are not there, staff are friendly, food is good in the restaurant and parking is great too. The pool table, swimming pool and large tv near bar also great. Overall: a lovely hotel, just check that the basics are working first.
