Christina p Couples - TripAdvisor review

We stayed here last night (16th Nov) in room 607 as a couple. Check-in: Awful. Long. Staff need training on how to manage long queues and guests who have a lot of questions (that do not relate to their booking) during check-in. The queue for check-in wasn’t particularly long when we arrived (approx 5 groups ahead of us). Unfortunately there were only two members of staff which resulted in at least 20 minutes worth of waiting just to check-in. The queue gradually grew even longer behind us with more people starting to huff and puff. There is nowhere to pay for parking other than the check-in desks, so some people were stood waiting for ages just to pay and leave! On this occasion, one family at the check-in desk wanted to ask every question under the sun; where to hire cars, directions for local religious sites, how to use Uber, directions for attractions, prayer facilities in the area and so on. This held up the queue even more and despite the queue being right back to the mains doors at this point, the check-in staff decided to have a long-winded and in-depth discussion with them. A more appropriate approach in this instance would have been to suggest the family have a look at their room and drop off their belongings then come back down and they can go through all information with them afterwards. Thus allowing the check-in staff to help get others in and sorted as well. It was becoming a bit of joke in the end, with the other member of staff trying his hardest to get through other people whilst the first one seemed to be having some sort of mother’s meeting. Room: I’m unsure if this hotel is being renovated at the moment as the Foyer looks like it belongs to a completely different building. The foyer and bar area are designed to a standard that does not reflect the poorer state of the rooms. The moment we got out of the elevator, we were greeted with a dimly lit, musty corridor. The room seemed old and tired, it was tatty and in need of a good once over with a paint brush. You could see that nothing has been done to the rooms and the focus is on the foyer/bar. Noise: It’s Broad Street, it’s going to be noisy obviously, but I would have thought that rooms that looks towards Broad street or were side facing etc, may have had more sound proofed windows. Sirens all night, screaming people, but also screaming people up and down the corridors inside. Overall, it served its purpose for one night but for £125 a night, I wouldn’t stay again. The Leonardo (previously Jury’s Inn) is a much better shout.

Just returned home (unfortunately) from a lovely stay at Novotel. On arrival we were greeted by friendly staff and I would like to highlight the excellent service from Silvia in reception she went above and beyond. Welcoming, friendly and delivering a great can do attitude, I hope management realise what a great member of staff they have in Silvia at reception. First impressions are so important and our great experience made me want to write this review to highlight it. It was my son’s birthday I made a special request and when we go to our room, there was a bottle of lemonade, birthday card, postcard and balloons - that was a lovely touch. The room was nice, clean and suitable as base camp. With kettle, fridge, tv, hairdryer etc. with fold out sofa and double bed. We visited the kitty cafe, sea life (just a 5 minute walk away) Thinktank, and the Christmas market. Ubers from hotel only took 2 minutes to arrive. Sainsbury’s next to hotel and Wetherspoons close by. With teenagers we grabbed some food at dixys chicken opposite (similar to kfc). Location was perfect with everything close by - only negative was we ran out of time ! Reception was nicely decorated see photos and smelt lovely at all times. On arrival back at our room after the Christmas market we tried to put on the TV and it said low battery so I asked the man on reception for replacement batteries, I returned to my room installed new batteries but alas the TV was now flashing red so I returned to reception and the staff member returned to my room. He tried to fix the issue but couldn’t so we ended up moving rooms to an executive one as only one available. I wish I knew the staff member’s name as he was very customer focussed and ensured we had a nice stay for my son’s birthday and I hope management can pass on our feedback, The new room had dressing gowns, slippers, coffee machine, hot chocolate etc and most importantly a working television. We had a good night’s sleep/ stay and went to breakfast at 8. Lots of choice and my boys impressed by the fresh pancake maker. My son had a great time at this hotel and I think we will return one day. Highly recommend

Bar humbug.

Good check in experience, good room with comfy bed and effective blackout curtains.Felt comfortable in all areas of the hotel and then we come to the bar area at night. I am 67 and like socialising, the bar area itself is great but the service on 15 th November at @10:45 was woeful.I joined a queue of at least6 people and waited and waited for at least 20 minutes to get served.I don’t mind waiting to get served as long as there is some kind of system and awareness being applied.People who by passed the queue and went to another part of the bar got served before the patient people in the queue not once but on several occasions.I suppose that I should be grateful because it gave me the opportunity to make two new acquaintances who were from South Wales as I am .We ended up laughing at our situation because we imagined the scenario if it had happened at a pub at home. The situation was made even more farcical because the barman had to leave the bar to get extra drinks as they had allowed the bottles to run out.Perhaps it might be a good idea prior to the beginning of the shift that someone takes a look at the bar and determines which extra alcohol they might need,it’s not difficult really.Enjoyed the stay but totally underwhelmed by the bar service. They were not busy either before that is put forward as an excuse.

No sleep, good breakfast and pleasant staff

Angle grinders being used at 1 am on the building works at the back of the building. Other noise coming from the building works too was extremely disappointing. I was in room 426 and had to be up at 6am. Really terrible night sleep. Staff were nice and the breakfast was very good, but I ended up extremely tired at the conference I attended the next morning.

Dear Darren C., Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We’re truly sorry to hear that you encountered disturbances during your stay, and we understand how frustrating this must have been, especially with an early start for an important conference. Please be assured that our contractors adhere strictly to a schedule of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and no construction work is authorized on our building outside of these hours. We take noise concerns very seriously and are investigating this further. It’s possible that the noises you heard originated from nearby street work or other unrelated projects in the area during that time. We appreciate your feedback and are glad to hear you enjoyed the breakfast and found our staff welcoming. Your experience is important to us, and we will do our utmost to ensure your future stays are restful and comfortable. Warm regards, George Fratiloiu Front Office Manager

From the outside, the hotel is not mum's finest, but that is true of more buildings in Birmingham. Fortunately, it is the inside that holds true and in that, this hotel is a beauty. Friendly staff, clean rooms and good food. The rooms are a bit dated, but clean and well maintained. I would love to come here again.

Dear Samaja, Thank you very much for your kind words! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay and appreciated our hotel’s interior charm, as well as the friendliness of our team. While the building’s exterior may not be the most modern, we’re glad that the inside experience—with clean, well-maintained rooms and good food—made a positive impression on you. We look forward to welcoming you back again in the future! Warm regards, George Fratiloiu Front Office Manager
