For over £300 a night, the basics must be covered before trying to be quirky

Kate D TripAdvisor review

This hotel looks outwardly amazing. There are so many good things to say about the decor - quirky, interesting, unique and beautifully curated public areas, the food - highly recommend the restaurant which serves some of the best middle eastern food I’ve had in a long time, the location - 10 minute walk from the station, lots going on in the area, the soundproofing - even though it’s a lively area the windows block out almost all of the noise from outside. Unfortunately there were a few things that have prompted a poor review. These may be particular to me and may not bother other people. 1) no air conditioning. There’s apparently an ‘air cooling system’ in the rooms but we had it on the coldest setting and the room was way too hot to sleep comfortably in. We had such poor sleep because of this. 2) when you’ve barely slept, all you want is a coffee asap in the morning and there are no facilities to make a coffee or tea or anything in the room. The mini bar is free but it had just water (which is usually free anyway), two basic beers and a cola of some brand I didn’t recognise. So no coffee in the room meant having to wait until showered and dressed etc to go for breakfast. 3) which brings me to the final point. The shower. There was no privacy as the shower had a clear door and as there wasn’t a bathroom as such (just a separate loo, separate shower, and the sink in the actual bedroom) it meant that you were showering with a clear door which offered no privacy at all from the main room. I get that they’re branding as different and quirky, but honestly, for over £300 a night, I don’t expect no air conditioning, no coffee making facilities in the room, and no privacy to shower. We stayed in a different hotel in a different part of Switzerland earlier in our trip and it was much cheaper but had all the basics covered which I think this hotel needs to do before trying to be quirky and different. I do regret spending this as mount of money staying here.

In typical 25hours style

In typical 25hour style, this hotel had a modern and trendy feel to it. From the check in area, to the restaurant, to the bar, right through to the room, it was all very welcoming. Location was short walk to main train station and parking was easy to access. No EV charging was disappointing however. Staff were obliging and friendly. Overall very hard to find fault although the Australian dollar really makes anything in Switzerland look pretty average value for money.

Overpriced and under serviced

Other reviews have probably did it better. In an effort to be trendy the hotel has sacrificed utility and comfort. Painted concrete floors, papered over concrete walls, bare concrete ceiling. Room cleaning only available upon request. Tacky impractical furnishings. I had to request a chair as the only thing to sit on was a bench. Decent location. Pleasant staff.

Bad Customer Service

I was given 300 CHF by my friend a few years back and I totally forgot about it. I emailed the hotel and was told that the general manager will not accept them because they expired end of 2024. I expected them to do something about it since it has only been ten months after expiration date. I decided to go in and see if I can talk to someone and see if they can do anything about it because 300 CHF is not a small amount. It’s not like I received a coupon from them but this was 300 CHF that was paid to the hotel to get a money voucher. I ended up speaking with the assitant manager who was super nice but could not make any decision until she will talk to the manager who was not there. I even told her if I can get part of the money from the vouchers and or they can offer me anything else. I mean they know that is unethical for them to put an expiration date on money gift vouchers since now their new gift vouchers have no expiration date. The manager wrote again that he can’t do anything about it but still welcomed me back to their hotel. I felt like he didn’t care to make an effort but still thought that after keeping the 300 CHF I will go back again. I am so disappointed in how such a big hotel that is part of a big chains of hotels don’t know how to treat or value their customers and are not willing find a solution. I really expected them not to keep the money but to find a solution. I know that is also my fault that I didnt redeemed the vouchers on time, but honestly how many of us have vouchers that we forget about it. I will never go to any of their hotels and restaurants if this is the way they treat their customers. Please take your hard earned money somewhere else.

A new hotel with tiny rooms and no airconditioning

We were disappointed with our stay at the 25 Hours, despite it being a modern hotel with friendly staff. The main disappointment was the room. It was was tiny and with cheap fixtures. It is clear that the hotel has been built and fit out at the minimum possible cost. The features of the room are designed to look trendy but are actually just a disguise for how poor the build quality is. For example, there was no separate bathroom - the shower door opens straight into the room. The basin for cleaning your teeth was next to the bed. There cupboard to hang your clothes, there is a bent wire hanging from the ceiling you can put hangers on which crumples your shirts. The floors of the room was polished concrete. There is a definite youthful styling that the hotel is attempting to achieve but it is all about how things look rather than how practical the design elements are. For example, our room provided coloring-in pencils with practical use, but no tea and coffee making facilities. The worst discovery in our room was that there was no air conditioning. I phoned reception who confirmed I was not mistaken and the hotel has no air conditioning. Instead, it has a centralised cooling system that was not switched on. In was advised to open the window. This was great on a Saturday night with all of the noise from the bars downstairs coming up. It was a horrible nights sleep. The location is OK near the main train station. It's about a 10 minute walk and it's totally flat and you can walk with luggage. It is not in a particularly nice area, but it's not a bad nor dangerous area either. The hotel's location is not that important because Zurich is pretty compact and we were able to walk to the nicer areas around the river and Altstadt. We went to use the hotel 'gym' and it comprised of a couple of low-quality exercise bikes and the like. On the whole, the 25 Hours Zurich is best avoided.
