A Disappointing Experience

TripAdvisor rating 2.0/5

mjherko TripAdvisor review

The privilege room was a disappointment. Except for a small closet with 4 hangers and a shelf, there was no other place to put clothes - no cabinets, no drawers. This meant pretty much living out of suitcases for 2 people for 5 nights. The heating/air conditioning system needed to be reset by hotel staff several times. After a long trip, we thought it would be nice to eat in the hotel dining room on our first night, however, the dining room was closed to hotel guests because there was a group function that took up half the room. The hotel staff offered to make up a plate for us to bring to our room. That would have meant sitting on the bed to eat. (Aside from the bed there was just one chair) This happened twice during our stay. Neither time was there any signage that the dining room was not available to other hotel guests. The Nespresso machine functioned sporadically. The bathroom could have used a couple more hooks and/or an additional shelf for storing toiletries and towels. On a positive note the wifi worked well (although it's an unsecured network) and the water pressure and water temperature in the bathroom were good. Also, the staff was friendly. This hotel might be adequate if you're planning on staying for one or two nights and feel no need to unpack.

Well located for Haymarket station, although despite it’s name it’s arguably more in Fountainbridge, this is a good sized hotel, and if you like Mercure then this is certainly a far better bet than their Princes Street option. Check in was quick and easy, and my room was located at the end of a corridor on the 3rd floor. There was some noise evident from the nearby lifts, but certainly not enough to keep me awake and I slept well with no noise from either inside or outside, although the air-con seemed to have a habit of switching itself off which meant the room did get rather hot at times. The room itself was a decent size with safe, tea/coffee making facilities, an empty ‘fridge as well as complimentary water and shortbread which was replenished daily, as were the towels, despite the sign saying that they wouldn’t be if they were left on the rail. The shower was decent enough, and everything was clean and tidy. Breakfast offered a good spread with all bases covered, including cooked, cold meat & cheese, fruit, cereals, pastries, etc. Overall, nothing to get excited about certainly, but a solid enough choice.

Well-located, clean and tidy

I stayed in Edinburgh days earlier in a nearby hotel. Of the two I’d go back to Mercure. The room was very similar except the shower was considerably bigger. There was a safe in my room, and I didn’t see one in the other hotel. Breakfast was good. Staff were friendly. Recommended
