Aggressively Spartan and Minimalist Rooms

TripAdvisor rating 3.0/5

EEBaker TripAdvisor review

The Ibis is an "economy" hotel that uses it's prime location close to the train station and the Royal Mile to command much higher prices than the hotel is generally worth. The design of the hotel is aggressively spartan and minimalist. It definitely feels like a budget hotel, almost a youth hostel experience, or maybe a hospital room, while commanding 200+ GBP per night. Judging by the Ibis, supply and demand for hotel rooms in the popular areas of Edinburgh are definitely a bit out of whack. The most lasting impression of the rooms at the Ibis are modular bathrooms that are clearly mass-produced in a factory and then just dropped into a corner of the guest room. They look and feel like something you would have in your cabin on a budget cruise line. Did it get the job done? Yes. Did we sleep well? Yes. Did we enjoy our stay? Meh.

This place is a NIGHTMARE.

Janis S TripAdvisor review

This place is a NIGHTMARE. Believe or not I like writing good reviews. And I wish I could write a good one for this hotel. First of all this was the most expensive hotel we stayed in on our whole 24 day trip. And we stayed in very nice properties in London, Belfast and Dublin. We are so perplexed why IBIS gets away with charging this much for sooooooo little! We only got one bath towel and two hand towels and no wash cloths. Which I guess is a thing in the UK re: wash cloths. Anyway, we begged for another towel. I have seen bathrooms bigger on sailboats. We barely could roll our luggage around the bed. And we had a corner room! BUT the reason this place can NOT be recommended is that we had a FIRE ALARM go off at 4 AM. I do not blame them for that part, things happen and they felt it was a technical glitch. What I do blame them for was their absolute inability to take care of this 9 story hotel during a potential fire. They do not have phones in the rooms and they do not have a PA system to help the guests know whats going on in a situation like this. I mean we know how to respond to a fire alarm. And a lot of people did respond in an orderly fashion. And then we stood outside in the Edinburgh night waiting and waiting and waiting. Finally went back up to our room like sheep. Never hearing the all clear but too sleepy to argue. The following morning no attempt was made to explain what happened. The only good thing I can say is their breakfast buffet was good but very crowded. WE couldn't even eat at a table one morning. This place take BIG bus tours so maybe that is why individuals pay too much. Stay somewhere else. I wouldn't do any of the IBIS properties in Edinburgh.

Not a 4 star hotel

We were told this was a 4 star hotel, we felt like we were in a hostel / dorm room. The bathroom is extremely small with no ventilation it felt like we were on a boat bathroom, no phone, safe or fridge in the room, no washcloths. Only thing good about this hotel is the location

Unfortunately my room No 340 was located close to a club or bar & there was loud music until 1.30am which prevented me from sleeping.

Dear Tim B., We regret to hear that your stay was not satisfactory with the disturbance from a neighboring establishment. Did you mention this to anyone at reception? We are here 24hr to help with problems like this. We will address this matter internally to ensure a more peaceful stay for our guests. Thank you for sharing your feedback. We hope to be able to welcome you back for a more enjoyable stay in the future. Best regards, Zoe - Front Office Supervisor ibis Edinburgh Centre South Bridge - Royal Mile
