Bed and room were comfortable. Staff were nice. After booking, we realised just how high the price was for what it was offering. Pool was small with little space to sit around, there's no bathroom in the lobby, and the bar is a small fridge behind the reception till. If it had been a budget option, we would have been OK however we paid more for the room than we would have at Crystalbrook locations and could have had decent pool, food, and bar services. I booked through Booking.com and really should have done some deeper research rather than trusting a central booking service.

Staff were very helpful and friendly. For a 'family', room, we had a few concerns. 1. Our above-average height 6-year old child could not get his mouth over the edge of the bathroom basin because it was so high, and could not reach the tap! Did hotel management not liaise with the renovation project manager?? 2. The floor of the room containing two single beds was sloping, and one of the beds was on a sideways incline! Lucky we did not have a second child who needed this. It would be great for future guests if the bed's feet could be adjusted to ensure it's level. 3. Guests, especially a family, need more places to hang wet towels, swim wear etc - we go to Cairns to spend time in the water, after all! Please install more racks/rails, etc, as there was barely enough space to dry bath towels 4. There was a pretty funky odour coming from the kitchen cupboards (we were in a room on the ground floor; sorry, I can't remember the number). Someone might want to investigate that!

The Mercure Cairns was clean, tidy and in a convenient location, and the staff were friendly during our interactions. Unfortunately, our overall experience was disappointing due to several issues that were not resolved satisfactorily. We booked a King Room but were instead allocated a Queen Room on arrival due to a mix-up with the booking provider we used. While these things can happen, we were disappointed that the price was not adjusted and the explanation provided regarding "dynamic pricing" did not adequately address why we were charged for a higher room category than we received. The advertised "ultra-fast Wi-Fi" was also effectively unusable throughout our two-night stay. Reception acknowledged that the network struggles when the hotel is at full occupancy, but the suggested solution did not improve the connection. Reliable Wi-Fi was one of the reasons we chose this hotel, so this was particularly frustrating. Although the staff were pleasant and courteous, our concerns felt largely dismissed rather than genuinely addressed. Prospective guests should also be aware that the hotel offers relatively limited on-site amenities. There is no gym or spa, and on-site parking is very limited to two spaces, which may be important considerations when choosing accommodation. Overall, while the hotel was clean and well maintained, the room downgrade, unreliable Wi-Fi and handling of our concerns meant the stay did not represent the standard we expected. Given the way these concerns were handled during our stay, I am now pursuing a formal complaint through Accor's Customer Care team and hope an appropriate resolution can be reached.
