When the NZ lockdown was announced I was in Wellington and due to fly home next day to Boston. Uncertainty reigned. My flight to Auckland was cancelled, I had to rebook as domestic flights and international flights were being cancelled, social distancing was being enforced and washing my hands became routine. I could not have been more happy to arrive in the foyer and be told I could book a room for the night. And the room was beautiful! The nicest hotel room I've ever stayed in.

In January I prebooked a room for May 2020 which I will no longer be able to use. I rang and asked if I could stay 25 March instead because we were having to get home to Whangarei before the “lockdown”. We arrived after 9pm and were charged a further $43.00. Blunt reception!. Not having had anything to eat since the evening before we asked if we could get something to eat. The answer was no, dining room was now closed. Room service? The answer was no. There was nothing to eat in the room which was No. 512 (a disabled room!!) In the morning my husband lifted the toilet seat and the underneath was filthy!!! Obviously had never been cleaned. We told reception as we left. Our whole experience was unacceptable and we won’t be staying with you again.

Please allow me a couple of days to look further into this to which I will be able to come back to you with a resolution. Again my sincere apologies that you had this experience during your stay and I do hope that we get the opportunity to welcome you back and better our service to you once our Hotel is re-opened to the public and back to normal. We were stuck there for three days locked down whilst we waited for Qantas to get us out of NZ. At the time I filled in a questionnaire saying what a great job your team was doing in the most trying of times but I did suggest that under the circumstances free WiFi would be a good thing. You surprised me by immediately getting on the phone to me saying that was a good idea and that you would refund everyone's WiFi. I thought cool excellent although I did think, and still do that an operation like yours does damage to their good reputation by charging guests for WiFi in this day and age. But low and behold I get home and you have indeed charged me for the WiFi.!! We had to catch a flight out of AKL and drop off a rental car and found the hotel centrally located. For an airport hotel it was very quiet. My wife pointed out to me the next morning that the windows were double paned and sound proof. THANK YOU!

The Hotel is in the perfect location for the Airport, just a walk away. Service was excellent. Our cooked breakfast was stone cold, we couldn't eat it. We were looking forward to having a nice meal before we checked in for our flight. However, it was the morning after lockdown so we didn't make a fuss.

I curtailed my tour of New Zealand as the coronavirus situation escalated, and I wanted to be as close to the Auckland airport as I could be in case I could get an earlier flight home. While I didn't succeed in that, I had quite a good stay at the Novotel while waiting, even as the hotel closed the restaurant and went to room service only, and prevented non-guests from entering. Staff was uniformly helpful and courteous while dealing with numerous and varied challenges. And the rooms are quite nice, with all the amenities that one could hope for. Bed and bedding were comfortable. This is just a side note, but I appreciated being able to walk to a grocery store and pharmacy (there are other stores, and fast food, at the nearby mall, but they were closed). Also, the Outdoor Gallery is close enough to walk, and I saw a fair number of stranded fellow travelers enjoying the grounds there.

Room was clean and tidy but we didn't like the glass doors in the shower and toilet. We didn't think it was fair to charge for room service when the bar and restaurant were closed. The catering and bar staff were exceptionally polite and caring when they were open for lunch.

We stayed at a very difficult time with New Zealand in lock down because of the Coronavirus crisis. We were trying to secure a flight home but there was a lot of uncertainty about what was available and when. Novotel’s reception staff were brilliant and gave us support, were flexible with our booking and printed off our eventual flight details which we had no facility to do ourselves.

The only thing I would recommend this hotel is the location. Don't expect you get 4 stars service here. 1. It was 4 pm, many people are still waiting for a clean room at the lobby. There are 3 counters, we have around 10 people waiting in a line in front of the counter close to the door, meanwhile there are always people cutting into the line straight to the other counters from the other side. No one guide if we should line up in 1 line or spread to 3 or anything. It was chaos and surprisingly none of the staff notice this. 2. Around 5 pm, I heard someone knocked door said "room service", I wasn't sure it's my door cause I didn't call any room service. Door was knocked again, I get out of my bed and toward to the door, and found the staff ALREADY opened my door without permit. I was very shocked. Did they train their staff that they can open the door straight after knocking twice? 3. Check out. The worst experience. "Check out please." I put my room key on the desk. "Stay back behind the tape!" the staff shouted at me twice with one arm raised up in front of my face. I was really shocked, I know we have to follow the social distance 2 meters but you don't have to be like that rude. I guess it might because of the mask on my face so I explain that I wear this cause I am going to the airport. "I didn't say you have virus, I just ask you to stay behind the tape." "Ok, but the way you said make me feel uncomfortable." I explained, and again, this hotel never let people down "I didn't say anything wrong" "What do you want me to say?"" I am just telling the fact. ""My manager is there, if you are not happy, you are welcome to tell her." This hotel must train their staff if any guest you don't like, just fight back. I believe it's just a tough time for everyone everywhere(coronavirus), I wasn't very happy with 1 and 2 experience however both front desk and bellman looks patient and polite so I am fine with that. But definitely not the last one experience. I have stayed at YHA, BBH, Air B&B, hotel in NZ. This is the most expensive one and the most disappointing one. Don't let the memory here become the last memory of NZ before you leave.

My sincere apologies that there were other aspects of your stay with us that did not meet your satisfaction. 1. On the day of your check-in, we had a large number of guests who were having late check-outs due to late departing flights which meant that not all rooms and room types were ready and available from the normal check-in time of 2 pm. Our team on that day were working extremely hard to try and best accommodate all our arriving guest with the limited available and ready rooms we had. I do understand that the lobby was not being managed to the best it could have and with the limited staff we did have on our team were doing the best they could given the ever-evolving circumstances (pandemic). 2. Did you get the name of the staff member who entered your room? I will be sure to pass this feedback onto our Food & Beverage Manager to address with their team accordingly reminding them of the standard 3 knock policy before entering a room. 3. Do you remember the name of the staff member who spoke to you like this? I will be sure to speak with all of our reception & front office team re-iterating our core values (Heartistary). We have a high standard of service that our team should be provided to the guest and on this occasion, it seems that this was not there. Again I will be speaking with the Front office & Receptionist team about this. Our pricing structure fits well within the legal requirements for any hotel's pricing which fluctuates with occupancy demand, location and the market pricing amongst other hotels within the vicinity. I do hope that once this pandemic is over that we have the opportunity to welcome you back once again to better our service to you. This is our second stay at this hotel and the rooms are very comfortable. Whilst we understand that things were a bit out of the ordinary on our recent stay, we can't understand why the food & drinks bill for lunch was incorrect on check out. I signed the bill when we finished lunch (and yes there was an extra item on there at the time which was corrected) to have it charged back to the room. In the morning on check out it was incorrect, overcharged & I was told it will be sorted. I've already sent an email & nothing has been corrected!
