MERCURE SORBONNE I will start this review by saying the staff at The MERCURE Sorbonne are extremely pleasant, and when asked, very helpful. Not warm, not eager, but helpful and mild-mannered. The entrance to the hotel is warm, inviting, well appointed and elegant. The room was warm and quiet. That’s where the good stuff ends… I have stayed in numerous hotels in Paris, and numerous ALL ACCOR hotels around the world; I am aware that space is limited and many are in former houses or apartments which makes designing the rooms a challenge; but… The room. Where do I start. The overall feeling was motel, not hotel. I asked to move as it was so cramped and old feeling, but the staff informed me I had the biggest room in the place (660) - it had a sofa in an alcove that was a pull out bed, two chairs that were in the way, an ikea-style bench at the end of the bed, a glass table that ran down one wall making that side of the bed difficult to get into, bedside tables that held one drink and a phone, and a small closet that only hung shirts as it was above the fridge and the safe, so coats or dresses had nowhere to go. There was not a single drawer in the room, so the top of the glass table was our closet and drawer space… not very elegant. The bed was a queen, which was comfortable enough, but the sheets were low quality. The fridge was warm, and therefore useless, which ruined the few things we wanted to snack on. The curtains were broken from over use. The carpet was ugly, and did not look or feel particularly clean. Nothing made sense from a design perspective - too much useless furniture, not enough closet space, ugly mismatched colors and designs, and either too much bright light or too little lamp light. Just a mess. If you were staying in this room as a family, I cannot imagine what you would be tripping over in the middle of the night, as it was cramped even for two people. The bathroom was beyond basic, although the lighting was good - harsh, but good. All three of the soaps and moisturizers were in free standing containers that were half full when we arrived; which, to me, signals lack of forethought and poor hygiene - I really do not want to use a dispenser that I know has been used by someone else (at least fill them up so I am gaslit by the pretense of newness). The towels were old, hard and small, and the toilet paper was unpleasant. There were no robes - if they had provided robes I could probably have used them to dry scrub my body while I wore it, judging from the state of the towels. Then, as if that wasn’t disappointing enough, here comes the kicker - there was only one water in the room; a single-use-one-person water bottle/carton. And, best of all, when we asked for another one as there were two of us, the poor girl distributing them to each room informed us that there was only one water per room per night. I mentioned that there were two of us, and she just said she was sorry, only one per room per night. We bought a case of water from the Monoprix to save them the worry of dispensing too many waters (they might have some left over so another guest and his wife don’t have to share a bottle upon arrival). And that was it. Utterly disappointing. Thankfully I used points to pay for most of it, but now I feel like the points were wasted, and as a Diamond Member of ALL ACCOR I feel like they lost the plot on this Mercure Hotel - the cover of the book is great, but the inside story is terrible. For this to be graded as 4 stars is a miscarriage of justice. I really did not want to be this harsh, or come across as bitter or fussy; unfortunately, this hotel left me no choice. It needs a redesign of the rooms, a new towels supplier, a newfound generosity of spirit, and a total rethink of the accreditation. The problems were so deep that I couldn’t even be bothered to mention anything when we were there, and nobody asked me how my stay was until we were leaving to grab a taxi for the airport, so I decided to grin and bear it for the week, and now I have moved on to another ALL ACCOR hotel in Bangkok and am much happier. If you are spending time in Paris, this isn’t the place to go. Unless you like to feel slightly robbed of your dignity. A 4 Star hotel should offer the feeling of simple elegance, not the feeling of ‘I apologize for being here, I hope I’m not in the way’. This is a hotel problem, not a staffing issue. Every person I spoke to was pleasant, apologetic and helpful. The staff have nothing good to work with and need help upgrading and redesigning their rooms, their bathroom accessories, and bottled water shortage. Again, I apologize for the brutality. If anyone wants me to run through it with them, I am happy to be of assistance, but I cannot recommend a hotel that left me feeling so dissatisfied and confused.

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay! The location was great, and one member of the staff stood out - Maeliss. She's an asset to the company! Always switched on, knows the hotel inside out, always ready to assist, and would have her attention down to the smallest detail! Breakfast was simple but satisfying. I only wish refrigerators were installed in each room, that's a huge down side to this hotel. But customers can always ask to keep things in the fridge at reception, which might be a hassle for some.
