Decent hotel but awful front desk staff

This was a rather peculiar stay at a mid level Mercure as Accor Diamond member. Check in I had booked two rooms for one night in my name (with my friend's name entered into the booking as requested on the website). When I arrived they could not find the booking. This never happened to me before. It turned out once the reservation number was dug out, that the Accor system had changed the name of the reservation to my friend's name. Very bizarre, it was clearly booked with my details, being logged into the Accor system. As I said to the front desk agent, nothing surprises me any longer with Accor IT which she wholeheartedly agreed with. So we are not alone battling the idiosyncratic Accor systems. She got it but not everyone in this hotel did, more about that later. The rooms booked were: a suite and a privilege room. They upgraded the second room to a suite too, which was very agreeable. Rooms The suites are all on the fifth floor which is only accessible via stairs from the fourth floor. Somewhat odd but this is a rather old building. The suites (identical) very spacious, with separate bedroom (with those stupid Germanic single duvets), living room with sofa and dining table, a talk area and a kitchen cupboard (mine was locked the other room's wasn't). It also featured a large enough bathroom with a shower only. I thought it was strange that the shower only had a shampoo dispenser but no shower gel. The mini bar was stocked with a solitary small bottle of water. The suites also come with a balcony. Location The hotel is easily located by car (24h = €29). A suburban train station is right next to it and the Cologne cathedral is a brisk 17 minute walk away. Breakfast Not included in the rate (a steep €28 for a Mercure) was decent. Germany does good breakfast usually. Checkout This is where it all fell apart. The front desk agent insisted that the reservation was in my friends' name so those points would not count for me. I tried repeated to explain (and showed him on the app the correct reservation) that he was wrong. He insisted that the name could not be changed (there was nothing to change as I had booked two rooms in my name and just noted my friend's name in the reservation). A manager was requested but refused to talk to me, remaining in the back office. So a lengthy back and forth ensued which was just beyond ridiculous. That Germanic insistence that it is the guest's fault (a premium guest at that) and not theirs does not sit well with me. Especially coming from a staff member who was still in nappies when I was already Platinum member with Accor, then the highest level. Eventually they relented (not without making a big spiel how they were doing me a favour) and a single bill in my name was issued (of course initially with my name being wrong). You could not make this up. A shame that a single ill trained staff member ruined the entire stay.

Nice relaxed atmosphere at Mercure Severinshof. The reception was very helpful and welcoming. The room was well equipped and quite spacious. There was a little bit of an odour in the room, but it was low level and didn't bother us. I guess if they could eradicate it they would have.

Lovely, helpful staff
