Excellent bedroom but visit ruined by lack of restaurant…with no advance warning

We regularly stay at a Novotel near Calais when returning from a holiday in France. The bedrooms tend to be clean and comfortable with secure parking. This proved to be the case here….but….on arrival I asked if we needed to make a reservation for the restaurant only to be told it was closed “but only for the week.” This was no good for us as we were there for one night and we hoped to have a meal following a 9 hour drive. To make it clear, Novotels tend to be on business parks on the outskirts of a city and I didn’t want the inconvenience of driving somewhere. We were told there was an Italian restaurant a few minutes walk away. We went, only to discover something that looked run down and wasn’t scheduled to open for another couple of hours. There was also a McDonalds- but I never go there. Luckily, we found a place to pick up a sandwich, but that was it ! If we had been warned on booking or in advance of arrival we would have gone somewhere else. A real let down

Friendly personnel, But very Small and French oriented breakfast (not even normal cheese) Very inconvenient and time consuming credit card prepayment system, with repayment in the morning.. even when everything had to be shared up front during reservation, as a long term cooperation with our company.

We have stayed at this hotel a number of times on the way from and to the U.K. on holiday. This time we were massively disappointed to find on arrival after a 9 hour drive the restaurant was closed. The staff were flippant and recommended a nearby restaurant which wasn’t due to open for another 2 hours- too late for us- and which looked appalling
