For those seeking warmer temperatures and more of a metropolitan vibe, North Island is better. For those seeking an escape amongst nature and wonder, South Island is better, however both natural beauty and metropolitan cities can be found on either island.,Some must-do experiences in South Island NZ include going for a hike on Mount Cook - New Zealand's highest mountain, visiting UNESCO world heritage site Fiordland National Park, staring up at the stars in Lake Tekapo - part of the UNESCO dark sky reserve, going skiing in Queenstown, and going on a street art trail in Christchurch.,You could drive from the top of South Island NZ to the bottom in around 14 hours however this is not recommended.
