When I stayed at the Novotel for the first time in May 2026, on the two separate occasions I stayed there I was given a room on the Lambton Quay side which transformed my experience of staying in Wellington. Over the last few years that I have been travelling to Wellington for work, I have had a lot of issues with hotels/rooms being exposed to road noise and have had to change hotels/rooms on more than one occasion. So, after staying at the Novotel in May, I thought I had finally found the right place for me to stay in Wellington when I come for work. However, last week they put me in a room on the Terrace side which is more exposed to traffic and which was immediately audible. I rang reception and asked if I could be moved to a room on the Lambton Quay side. The person I spoke to said they needed to talk to the manager. The manager then said, "Just this once - we don't normally move people as the traffic noise stops in half an hour". That is most certainly not my experience of staying in Wellington on multiple occasions. I was then sent to a room on a lower floor with an unpleasant outlook like a naughty school child relegated to the corner. I like staying at the Novotel, it doesn't always come up within the Ministry of Justice budget for me so I can't always stay there, and the only issue I have with last week's experience is the manager's reaction as generally I find the staff wonderfully courteous and helpful. If there was a room available on the Lambton Quay side (and there was more than one), then just move me. Don't tell me "just this once" and then patronise me by telling me I won't hear the traffic in half an hour anyway. A disappointing and unnecessary response.
