The room smelled musty.

Location is good and the room is spacious and clean. The lights are not bright enough but it’s my personal preference. The lunch was served late hence not suggesting to order lunch during peak hour if you’re in rush. All other thing else is good 😊

Ideal for walking to the Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minhs Masoleum and the Sword lake, not too far from the Old Quarter and the Hanoi Hilton Prison. The check in was very smooth, the conceirge was very helpful when booking taxi's and restaurants. In fact all the staff do the hotel proud. A special thank you for my birthday cake and fruit which was brough to my room and the discount off the spa treatments

We stayed several nights at the Grand Mercure Hanoi. The hotel is only a few years old and the rooms are nicely designed, however the overall experience unfortunately did not meet the expectations of a five-star hotel. The rooms themselves are modern and well furnished, but the cleanliness was not always perfect. In the bathroom we also noticed visible mold on the silicone joints in the shower. At check-in we had booked a “high floor” room, but were initially offered a room on the 7th floor. After asking again we were then given another room at the end of the corridor, which unfortunately had a noticeable musty smell coming from the bathroom. The hotel was fully booked at the time, but after we raised the issue again we were moved to another room on a higher floor. This room was slightly better regarding the smell, although it was still somewhat noticeable. It also had a connecting door to the neighboring room which was not very well soundproofed. The entrance area and the lobby are nicely designed and create a good first impression. However, the service at the door was inconsistent. As a German guest the door was almost always opened for me, while my German-Vietnamese partner was often ignored, which felt a bit strange. The pool area is quite disappointing for a hotel of this category. There are only four heavy metal loungers, which feel outdated and uncomfortable. However, the two staff members working at the pool and fitness area were very friendly, attentive and welcoming, which we appreciated. Breakfast offers a reasonable selection, but the atmosphere towards the end of breakfast service is not pleasant. About 15 minutes before the official closing time (10:00), staff already start informing guests that breakfast is ending and begin clearing labels and items from the buffet. This creates unnecessary pressure and a rushed atmosphere. Another weak point was the Vivu Sky Bar / Pool Bar. The cocktails unfortunately did not meet the standard expected from a hotel of this category and guests have to walk to the bar themselves to place orders instead of receiving table service. In addition, although the listed opening hours state that the bar is open until midnight, we were told at around 11:15 pm that we could no longer order drinks and were unable to even order a beer. The waiters also reacted rather uninterested and unfriendly when we asked about this, which added to the disappointing experience. During our stay there was one day where a foreign hotel manager appeared to be reviewing operations throughout the property. On that day we noticed that the overall service and friendliness of the staff across the hotel was noticeably better, which shows that a higher service level is clearly possible. Overall, the hotel has potential and the design is nice, but it currently feels like maintenance and service standards are not fully where they should be. Considering the price level of the hotel, the overall experience did not fully justify the cost. In our opinion it does not quite meet the level expected from a five-star hotel or from the “Grand” branding. We hope the hotel management takes this feedback constructively, as the property itself has good potential if service consistency and maintenance are improved.
