The doors of the Rathauspark had a way of shutting out the frantic hum and heat of Vienna, replacing it with the dignified, quiet hum of a grand house that had seen a century of people coming and going. Ruairi stood at the reception desk, his bags in tow, feeling that slight, weary prickle of travel fatigue that usually makes a man wish he was already back in his own armchair. But looking across the polished counter at the young woman with the remarkably bright eyes and the impeccably neat uniform, he felt himself settling down. She gave him a smile that suggested she had been waiting all afternoon specifically for him to arrive."Ah, Mr. D.," she said, her voice a delightful, melodic blend of Viennese phrasing and perfect English. "We have been expecting you. A long journey, I imagine?" "Long enough to make me thoroughly appreciate the look of this lobby," Ruairi said, offering his passport. "Though I must confess, when I see a building with this much history, I always have a sneaky suspicion that the plumbing might be historical too."The receptionist let out a soft, genuine laugh, the kind that wasn't strictly in the employee handbook but made a guest feel instantly at home. "I can promise you, Mr. D., the Empress Elizabeth herself never had the benefit of our water pressure. And more importantly, given the weather outside, the air conditioning in your room is modern, quiet, and cold." "Music to my ears," Ruairi replied, feeling the tension leave his shoulders. "There’s nothing worse than an old hotel that expects you to suffer for the sake of atmosphere.""No suffering allowed here," she said firmly, tapping away at the keyboard with practiced efficiency. "We like our history to be comfortable. Now, you are on the fourth floor. A beautiful, quiet room facing the inner courtyard." She handed over the keycard with a look of such earnest pride that Ruairi half-expected the room to have a terrace overlooking paradise. "If there is absolutely anything you need—a recommendation for dinner, directions to the tram, or just an extra pillow—you must promise to ask. We want you to feel that this is your home in Vienna, even if only for a short while."Ruairi took the key, quite charmed. "With a welcome like that, I suspect I’ll find it very hard to leave." As he stepped into the lift and glided up to the fourth floor, he decided she was entirely right. The hotel was an absolute treasure. The corridor was silent, the carpet thick underfoot, and the air delightfully cool. He found his door, but just before he tapped the card against the reader he glanced down the hallway. Hanging on the wall was an elegant, framed print of old Vienna. Ruairi walked over, tilted his head, and smiled. It was hanging perfectly, beautifully, undeniably crooked.Well, Ruairi thought, his smile widening as he turned the key to his room, God bless them. It wouldn’t do for a place to be entirely perfect, or a man would have nothing to write home about.
