Stayed for a night during a business visit. The hotel is close to Newport train station, but is a bit of a walk if you have luggage. Taxis will drop you close to the hotel, but you still have to walk for a short distance, as the main entrance is in a pedestrian zone. The hotel itself is the tallest building in Newport, so the upper floors have nice views of the city. Rooms are basic and functional - slightly roomier than an Ibis, as you may imagine, but less than a Novotel. They have pretty much most of what one would expect in a three-star property. Mercure Newport has a third-floor restaurant with a okayish choice of food and a well-stcked bar, though it's a pity they don't offer a local beer or gin among the choices for the free welcome drink. The wifi was down on the night I arrived, but was working after 8 in the morning. The lack of an intercom was an irritant. Responses to calls and WhatsApp messages were sometimes slow. The front desk was mostly friendly and helpful. All in all, a reasonable choice for a short stay.

good hotel but having some trouble with fire alarms

i stay regularly and it is always a decent experience, especially because the staff are really approachable and helpful. they seem to be having issues with the fire alarms at the minute however, with them going off without any actual incident including in the middle of the night. not ideal when you are there on a work trip!

Multiple false fire alarms theoufhout the day and night - even one at 4am!
