Pros: central, lovely meal at Staten restaurant, and the cost to stay was great value for money ($114 as an Accor member), staff friendly. Cons: single glazing, so room was super noisy from street (room 501) bins got emptied in middle of night, people singing and shouting during night etc. Bed was not the Novotel quality I am used to. TV channels just stupid frankly, nothing made any sense there. Also, it's very tired, needs a refurb, bits missing from taps, decor dated etc. Parking tricky on street and expensive $5 an hour, (free overnight 8pm - 8am only) their carpark was full (my fault I did not book).

A very dated interior with a gloom that is not in line with the Accor Group. Even the pillow cases and other trimmings are black the bathroom is so dated too. there is no inviting allure even in the foyer. I cannot describe any other rooms I did not se and yet being a loyal customer this was the gloomiest hotel ever stayed.

Temporary dinning room could have been made more homely. For example tables set rather than completely bare, even if they are not used. It is also more welcoming that way. . We also had to get our own cutlery and napkins once we had chosen a table.

Always a good place for a couple of nights stay. As a solo traveler, with no vehicle, the hotel has a good situation in the city. Walking distance to all the forms of transport is easy. There is also a taxi stand opposite, for convenience. Only complaint, is the TV reception could be better.

Great location as easy walk to most things in Wellington. Close to Cuba Street and the night markets. Plenty of good eating close by. Rooms are a bit noisy though. Friendly staff and rooms felt clean.

Best place to stay if your solo, and have no transport. Close to town, and a ten minute walk to Te Papa, and the information centre. The bed and breakfast deal is very good. The breakfast buffet selection has all the basic food one could want. Booking in is seamless, and efficient.

Wits888 Business - TripAdvisor review

I was disappointed to discover that this was a 'budget' hotel. This was conveyed to me by the reception when I called and asked if I could get slippers and a bathrobe. They said 'we don't have those things as we are a budget hotel'. I said I didn't know this was a budget hotel and I would never have chosen it if it was. I was looking for an Accor property that was the closest to Te Papa where I had a conference. I am an Accor Platinum member. Generally I found the experience somewhat lacking compared to other Mercures I've stayed at in the region. This should probably be an Ibis.

The rooms were very clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I had a great nights sleep in the comfortable bed. The location is within walking distance to shops. Loved the food in the restaurant.

Handy Location to transport shops cafe's and restaurants Reception Staff freindly and helpful. Would recommend to anyone wanting a handy location and good value for their money. If you are travelling by own car has parking, if you flying it is handy to all means of transport to and from the airport and not too expensive if you take a taxi.

Room for improvement

The room was okay, but in need of an overhaul. The curtains had tears in them, the decor is tired and we only had 3 channels to choose from on the TV. Some woodwork in the corridors needs attention and the whole building needs a refurb. Our friends stayed at your hotel the same night, and they had a really bad experience with some kids in rooms to the left and to the right of their room. The kids were going between rooms, slamming doors and making a lot of noise. When our friends complained the manager said there was nothing he could do about it. This is unacceptable and had that been me I would have left the hotel and demanded a full refund.

Great location and modest price

TheoProf Business - TripAdvisor review

This is an older property. The rooms are fine/ good. The dinner (part of an organized event) was very good with old fashioned and generous portions. Overall is definitely choose this hotel for its value for money. Located on the corner of Willis Street and Dixon, it is 10 minutes to most things. The trade off of being slightly away from the waterfront and Lambton Quay is the modest price.

Not sure if the hotel is going through a refurbishment program (1 elevator was OOO) but in the case of my room, it certainly needs work. The bathroom fittings were loose and the bathroom felt very basic - not Mercure standard. The TV only had 3 channels on it (TV1,2 & 3) and even there, the aspect ratio was out and half the picture was missing. On a plus, the bed was comfortable and the room was clean. I have stayed here many times (did not get my room up-grade) - the bar was emty and uninviting so did not use my drinks voucher either. Will be back but hopefully will see improvements.

Hi stgeorgesonthebend, You are correct in saying that the hotel is having some upgrades. We have nearly completed our lift replacement program. We are currently looking at options for the restaurant and the foyer. Sky was taken off during Covid but it is back on now. Let us know when you are next at the hotel as it would be good to meet up. The hotel is obviously undergoing work which is always an unpleasant surprise when you check in. Hopefully the work on the lifts will result in them running in a reliable manner because during my stay one was out of commission and other broke down. It seemed like this was only just a Mercure standard property very old and basic fitout from the TV to the bathroom not at all current when compared with other Mercure properties in the region.

When travelling for a rare holiday my intention was to spoil ourslves. We thought the Mercure would live up to the same standard as the Pullman or Novotel hotels, but we were disappointed. The hotel was old. Although refurbished, it was mutton dressed up as lamb. It was functional but not overly enjoyable. I think the fridge we had on our room was over thrity years old. The shelves were all broken. No place to get ice. and quite unuseable. Very disappointing.

Nigel G Families - TripAdvisor review

I talked my wife into staying here rather than our normal Grand Mercure on the Terrace. What a terrible decision!! Through no fault of the hotel it was noisey 24/7 due to waste water issues. Then there was poor quality food in the restaurant both at dinner and breakfast- such a disappointment. Then on the second day the restaurant area was closed - no warning at the time of booking or on arrival. What's the point of being an ACCOR member? Leaving the hotel was even a problem. We won't be returning to the Able Tasman.

Restaurant staff were amazing!! Receptionist was unwelcoming. Assumed we were among a tour group and jumped to serve customers behind us in a queue. She then made a "brush off " comment, saying that she didn't see us there waiting!! One of the two elevators was out of service. Room was old and cupboards and draws did not close properly. Shower pressure was poor.

Chris I Business - TripAdvisor review

Staff were very helpful especially as I had mucked up my booking and needed an extra night. The bent over backwards to get something sorted which they did. I often chose to say here as it isi central and usually best priced in comparison to the other Accor hotels in Wellington. The only hiccup this time was a terrible smell which permeated the floors and lifts. When I asked about it they said they had the grease traps cleaned and that the company doing it had not done it properly. They had them back in and it went the next day. My only suggestion would be to inform all those staying of what was happening so that people weren't left thinking there was a terrible problem.

Had booked 2 nights here for the end of our trip to the North Island. When I became ill and unable to enjoy touring on our 3rd last day we decided to stay an extra day to recover. But at a huge mark up in price. Not happy!!

Murray M Friends getaway - TripAdvisor review

Awesome - great service, food, reception - a wonderful stay - we were totally at the mercy of Wellington service persons and they were awesome. I believe they knew we had been to the Beer festival. The hotel is in a wonderful location and has a great kitchen and good beer on tap. We were totally happy :)
