This was my second stay, the first being a few years ago. I normally stay at the Mandarin Oriental, but it was full on those 2 occasions. The hotel is pleasant enough - the room is large and comfortable. I was on a half board package for 6 nights. Nightly dinner was included in the package although I only had dinner in the hotel 3 nights. The dinner arrangement does not make sense. I was told I could only take dinner at the Colonial restaurant, which serves a set menu. If I want room service, it had to be before 6 or after 10 pm. I went to the Colonial twice. First time, there was only 1 other table. Second time, I was the lone guest the whole night. On the other nights when I was not there, the restaurant could well be totally empty. Yet, service was not prompt. I requested to have dinner at the AlBahar restaurant (a better managed place it seems) but was told 'no' (although I could during my first stay). They finally allowed me to use room service during normal hours, which I used once. The economics don't make sense. Why bother to have the Colonial open each night just for 1 or 2 guests? Apart from guests on the half board package, there are probably no others. Isn't it better to close the Colonial and allow guests on full board to use the AlBahar or the poolside restaurant which are serving more customers or room service. This present arrangement increases cost for the hotel and leaves guests with a less than satisfactory experience. I thought this would be useful feedback for the hotel management.
