We have stayed at fairfield manor before it is a perfect location for visiting York, the hotel on the ground floor offers much more than a premier inn which is very good. However the rooms are desperate for an update they have not changed since we last visited. The mugs in the room were dusty, the lights above the bed were dangerous the toilet was useless and general decor is dated, this was the same for all 3 rooms we had. We were annoyed on the final morning of our stay as we thought we would order a breakfast bap off the lounge menu and after asking 3 members of staff we still had no idea what to do they kept offering the full breakfast which we had a couple of days earlier which was average and we didn't want to pay the full price again, in the end we just went back to our rooms then left. Luckily we did have something for our 3 year old daughter to eat. It took a bit of a shine off what was an enjoyable visit to York and our daughter loved running around the hotel. We were considering staying at a mercure later in the year on the way to Cornwall but not sure anymore as we have had a general better room and experience with premier inn even if they lack a bit of the added character that mecure hotels offer. We also would have just liked 2 room but apparently we could not have 3 adult to one room which was frustrating.

Hotel was clean and tidy, room and restraunt probably need modenisation. Decor was tired and out of place given the main enterance area and modern look. Food was good. Staff helpful. Would stay again for work but not for personal trip.

Overall enjoyed the stay with friendly staff and enjoyable meals. One area of concern was we were not made aware of a 10% service charge on the wine when being shown the list albeit we we were given a refund.

No way a 4 star hotel.

How this property has been awarded 4 stars is completely beyond me. I have stayed in 2 star properties with far superior facilities. The exterior of the hotel, gardens and reception area is pleasant enough. Walking through the corridors towards your room you get the expected creaking of wooden floors which is expected when staying in an older character property. The room was a massive let down and the bathroom was worse. No air conditioning in the room – a fan was provided which didn’t work. The beds were hard with no mattress topper. No USB ports in room. No refrigerator in room. Small flatscreen TV. No laundry bag for used clothes. No in-room safe. The carpet had seen better days. 4 star room facilities??? More shocking was the bathroom. While I’m no professional plumber this had been fitted by a cowboy. The back to wall toilet was 6 inches from the wall with ugly pipes protruding from rear. No grab handles for getting into and out of the bath. The wooden areas were rotting. Toilet roll holder not fitted properly. Corrosion on the sink waste. No basin mixer taps. Cracks in ceiling which had been bodge repaired. The silicone sealant looked as it had been applied by a small child. 4 star bathroom???? I was there for 2 nights and housekeeping did not service the room. I had the DND sign on my room handle until I went out for the day just before noon, at which point I turned it around to say gone out. When I returned to my room at 10pm that night, my key cards didn’t work and I found the room had not been cleaned. Explanation from the front desk was that they saw the DND sign in the morning and ignored the room for the rest of the day. 4 star housekeeping???? Only saving grace was the breakfast which was excellent. Good selection of cereals, fruit, juices and hot items. Planning a repeat visit to York in July but definitely will not be returning to the Fairfield Manor.
