I recently stayed at the ibis Leeds Centre Marlborough Street and, as a Silver Member of the Accor Group, I had certain expectations that were unfortunately not met. Here’s a detailed breakdown of my experience: Check-in Experience While the check-in process was quick, it was flawed. I was not greeted or acknowledged as a Silver Member, which I find disappointing, as it’s a hallmark of Accor’s loyalty programme. I had booked breakfast for all days through the app and was given a fixed price, but I was overcharged by £10.50. When I brought this to the staff’s attention, I had to go through unnecessary questioning, despite showing the price breakdown in the app. The staff initially dismissed this as insufficient proof and only rectified the error after checking Opera and realising my membership status. Even my welcome drink was overlooked until I mentioned my membership, and my request for a late checkout was met with the vague response to “speak to staff on the day.” There was no warm welcome or gratitude for my loyalty. Compared to other ibis properties, this felt far below standard, closer to an ibis Budget experience. Staff Interaction The overall demeanour of the staff was quite standoffish, especially at the front desk. As an introvert, I seldom engage unless necessary, but even minimal interactions felt unnecessarily formal and transactional. Evening staff were marginally friendlier, though still not particularly engaging. In stark contrast, the breakfast team stood out as the most pleasant and professional members of the hotel’s staff. Room Experience The room itself was outdated, but the view was a redeeming feature. It offered a beautiful blend of Leeds’ industrial charm, modern cityscapes, and the Yorkshire Dales in the distance. I also appreciated the windows that could be opened for fresh air, a rarity in many modern hotels. The bed was comfortable, and the room was peaceful overall. However, the swipe-card system for room access was inconvenient. It often failed to work, requiring frequent trips to reception for reprogramming. Upgrading to a contactless key system would significantly improve the guest experience. The bathroom fan was another issue, acting as a conduit for external noise and odours. On New Year’s morning, I was disturbed by loud partygoers, including explicit sounds that clearly came through the vent. Later, the bathroom was filled with the smell of cigarette smoke, again likely due to someone smoking in their bathroom. Food and Breakfast The breakfast was one of the highlights of my stay. The food was fresh, well-prepared, and varied. The breakfast team deserves special praise for their warm and attentive service, standing out as the stars of the trip. Checkout Experience My checkout experience was lacklustre. At 13:49, the staff member was busy with her laptop and dismissively instructed me to “just chuck it [the key] in the box.” There were no follow-up questions about my stay, leaving the final interaction feeling impersonal and rushed. Overall Impressions While the hotel had some positives, such as the peaceful atmosphere, gorgeous views, and good food, the service and overall approachability of staff left much to be desired. Small issues like outdated room features and noise disturbances through the bathroom fan detracted from the experience. With Premier Inn located just across the road and numerous other hotels closer to Leeds station and the city centre, it’s unlikely I would choose to stay here again. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option with decent views and are willing to compromise on service, this hotel may suit your needs. Stayed whilst in Leeds for work - overall was fine. Would use again if needed. Was nearer to town than looks on the maps and the access under the A58 flyover was fine as a pedestrian. Desk staff on arrival and during the stay were very supportive (-:
