Last weekend was supposed to be a treat for my niece and my Mom. My niece, who graduated with honors (of course!) and my Mom, who celebrated her 85th birthday last May 25. While we did, in a sense, enjoy our stay, the only thing I can say is… Sofitel has lost its shine. Never mind the dreadful eyesore of a dredging activity that destroyed a once wonderful vista, where one can enjoy a cup of joe or tea while looking at Manila Bay’s famous sunset—it’s not the hotel’s fault one can no longer enjoy the view. What I found ludicrous was a series of irritants not even worthy of a two-star review. First… Check-in was smooth, yes, but even with us getting in 30 minutes late, one room was still not ready for occupancy. My sister-in-law had to request for another room just so they can rest while the original room was being prepared. Second… I booked for two “non-smoking” rooms. I request non-smoking rooms wherever I am billeted, because I have asthma, and am ultra sensitive to unpleasant scents. The one my Mom and I got, was rank with the scent of stale cigarettes. Third… I called the front desk to complain about the smell (which was triggering my headache) not once, not twice, not three times… only after the sixth call, and only after they sent someone from housekeeping to spray the room with an air freshener that smelled disgustingly sickly sweet, adding nausea to the mix, did they finally change the room. After I asked them if they wanted me to go down to the front desk and cause a scene, and after I also told them that they will be bringing me to the hospital if I got sick, were we finally transferred. The new room still had a smell, but it was way tolerable, and they at least sent up an aerator that smelled like cinnamon (a scent I like) to help freshen up the space. Fourth… We went down to have a light dinner. The pizza was nice, although I have had better. The soda I ordered took too long to arrive, I had to ask the staff if they were getting it from the soda factory. Fifth… Ah, when I asked a staff at Spiral how to go poolside… she was gracious enough to tell me to go through a hallway, and at the end, to turn left… the entrance to the pool, by the way, was on the right side. Sixth… Back in the room. Since I know hotels provide guests with amenities like free soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, I did not bother to bring mine. Now, I am all for sustainable packaging and all that, but… maybe if the packaging was easy to open? Where the perforated side opens to let the paste out? The danged thing felt like it needed an exorcism before the soul of the toothpaste can be released from its hell. And what’s with the teeny-tiny amount of toothpaste? Seventh… Le Bar has the most divine pastries I have ever tasted, and right after I woke up I went down to get some for breakfast, as we opted not to avail of the buffet in Spiral. After choosing six scrumptious pastries—croissants, puff pastry, several Danishes and a cinnamon roll, I patiently waited for the staff to ring up my orders, when… “Mam, it’s less 10 percent with your All Accor membership. I just need to take out one of the pastries. Your total is P615, less 10 percent is…” I think my brains shut down. Why the need to return one of the pastries so that I can avail of the 10 percent discount? What the heck is the rationale behind his logic? Oh, Le Phew! Eight… Carpet mites. I miss Diamond Hotel Manila. P.s. Except for my having to call several times and getting a runaround from faceless staff, those that I encountered face to face were courteous enough, and the few hours we spent at Cocos was pleasant enough, so there is that. I still miss Diamond Hotel Manila.

Not as good as expected!

During my stay at the Sofitel hotel I realized that my watch was missing. I wanted to be sure that I lost it during my stay so I asked the staff to check cameras when I last wore my watch. They checked it and saw the watch on my arm from the camera. Then I explained them it was probably taken from my room as my roommate also mentioned that she saw the watch on the bathroom in our room. It has been more than 24 hours since I informed the hotel staff but I haven’t received any explanation from them. They keep telling me that they check with security, they check the cameras, etc! Non-sense explanations after a while! I already left the hotel and the country and I don’t believe that they will find my watch or made a sincere explanation about what happened! All I can say is the Sofitel Manila is not a safe hotel to stay!!!! Please be careful with your belongings!
