Unexpected Experience at Novotel Monte Carlo

TripAdvisor rating 3.0/5

fhaentjens TripAdvisor review

As a seasoned traveler and a Diamond Accor member, I've had the privilege of experiencing various Accor hotels worldwide. Unfortunately, my recent stay at the Novotel Monte Carlo in Monaco with my partner fell short of the typical Accor standards we've come to appreciate. One of the first surprises was the welcome drink policy. Unlike other Accor hotels where all guests in a room are entitled to a complimentary welcome drink, here it was limited to just one person. This felt particularly unwelcoming, especially for couples and families. Moreover, the hotel's approach to 'complimentary' amenities was rather perplexing. The refill of complimentary water, a standard in most hotels, was chargeable here. This not only felt penny-pinching but also contradicted the usual hospitality standards of Accor hotels. Another baffling rule was regarding the complimentary breakfasts for Accor members. Despite our membership status, we were informed that free breakfasts were not available due to some unusual and inexplicable hotel-specific rules. This lack of consistency with the Accor brand's usual benefits was quite disappointing. Perhaps the most startling policy was being charged for requesting empty plates and cutlery. It's hard to comprehend how such basic requests, which are typically complimentary in other hotels, incurred additional charges here. While the hotel itself boasts a great location and the staff were courteous, these unexpected rules significantly impacted our overall experience. It's important for fellow travelers, especially those familiar with Accor's usual standards, to be aware of these unique policies at the Novotel Monte Carlo.

This time rather disappointed.

I have stayed here four or five times this year, usually quite happy. This time I got a room on the mountain side where you cannot open the windows and air the room in spite of an unpleasant smell (probably from the cleaning detergent, and on Sunday a strong smell of (burnt? or wrongly cooked?) fish, which pervaded the whole hotel throughout the afternoon. The room and installation seemed a bit run-down and the contents of the room are more than simplistic, including paper cups in bathroom and tea caddy, and at one point in the middle of ironing the iron and all sockets broke down. There was also some confusion at check-in: i was told I was only booked for 2 nights, although I have a confirmation for three nights. The price was very decent this time - with the summer season rates I would have found this room unacceptable. The personnel is very nice and helpful!

Great location close to city center, Monte Carlo Casino and the trainstation. Friendly staff. Only complain is that we only stayed for one night, and in the morning they knocked multiple times and also opened the door twice in order to clean before 9, we checked out at around 10:30. Would have been nice not to have been awaken by staff.
