Check-in process was simple and reception staff were very friendly. Room was clean and tidy upon arrival and I was offered a double room despite there being only twins available when I booked, so that was much appreciated. Breakfast was good the following morning, and check-out was easy - it was also easy to keep my bags in storage after handing in my room key, which I was grateful for. All in all, a pleasant stay in a well-located hotel - I would book again.

Bad night’s sleep

I stayed on a Saturday night in a room on the first floor, and there was very loud music playing outside until the early hours of the morning. I appreciate this is not the hotels fault but either it should be made clear on the website that it is in an area with loud music, or better sound proofing installed, or even ear plugs provided would have helped. I don’t know if this is every night or just at the weekend. The pillow was also lumpy and uncomfortable. All in all I unfortunately had a really bad night’s sleep and won’t be back because of this. However, the room was clean and I appreciated the towels and toiletries provided.

Wonderful, welcoming hotel

The hotel is a hidden gem! It is situated in central Birmingham, five minutes walking distance from Digbeth Coach Station, less than 10 minutes walking to New Street Station and located in the heart of China Town. The Hippodrome and the Birmingham Royal Ballet are both one minute around the corner. The Bull Ring shopping centre is about 5 minutes walk away. But by far the best recommendation for this hotel is the staff. I mention 'Sala' and 'Ragu' by name - Sala was kind, understanding, calm and reassuring, and Ragu was continually helpful, cheerful, always enquiring if we needed anything more, and always happily approachable. But the other staff, whose names I didn't learn, were also very helpful. I would return to this hotel just because of the welcoming staff. There are slight flaws in the hotel. Although the room was kept impeccably clean, yet the tv handset wasn't working (I forgot to tell the staff). We were warned by the staff that the rooms could be very noisy on weekend nights, and I heard two people saying that their rooms had been noisy the night before (a Saturday). Our room, 127, was only noisy if we kept the window open. When both (double) windows were closed the noise was eliminated. But on a hot night, when one might want to keep the window open, there would be a problem. Apart from that, the breakfasts were the normal hotel fare and the platters were always replenished immediately. I visited friends in other hotels in the area. They were more expensive I expect, but certainly the Ibis was equal with them all, and none of the others had the same amenable atmosphere.
