Not the best of rooms

We were allocated room 32. On entering the room, it was cold and had a strange smell. The wall heater was luke warm. I checked the wall thermostat... it had been turned clockwise to the maximum point. I turned it back to minimum and gradually turned it up to see if it "clicked" when room temperature was reached (15C). I turned it further to 20C. I next tried to make adjustments on the radiator itself but initially it would not react to my finger touch (too cold...?). The radiator was set to 20C but not heating the room. So I turned it up to 22C, which appears to be maximum. The radiator heated for a while but then stopped again - the room was still cold. I then managed to access the program settings on the radiator and changed it from "BASIC" to "AUTO"... the radiator started working and continued working. Now for the room smell - it wasn't coming from the bathroom - but appeared to be coming from the carpet... it smelt like cabbage boiling... not what you expect in a hotel bedroom. We went to dinner, having sprinkled "OLBUS menthol drops" on the carpet. When we returned the OLBUS had masked the cabbages and the room was now warm. We slept. In the morning, the cabbage smell had returned. We think the room needs a good steam clean to freshen it.

This was our first visit and we were not expecting much from a small hotel stuck behind a clinic. The welcome was excellent and we were very impressed with the dinner menu and food we were served. We will certainly return.
