Good location but that is it...

Douglas L TripAdvisor review

Mercure Newcastle is located in a very convenient location and has access to parks, shopping centres and amenities. However, the hotel itself is a big disgrace and by far the worst Mercure that I have ever been to and is in desperate desperate need of a makeover. For a supposed 4 star hotel, there were cracked tiles in the bathrooms, scales/mould over the tap heads, and worst of all DEAD COCKROACHES in the room! When we raised this to reception, they said that this was normal and offered to clean the room for us. There was no empathy or offer to change rooms or to give us a place to have a meal while we wait for the room to be cleaned. My partner had to fight to have the room changed and even then, the other room smelled as damp and dusty on the windowsills (minus the cockroaches). Mercure really needs to re-assess this site and how it manages its rooms as well as customer service. This place has really put a sour taste in my mouth on whether I continue staying with the Mercure brand.

I was assigned a room on the 5th floor and it stank of cigarette smoke plus the room itself was filthy and in disrepair. Happy to share images. I did try to ring down to front desk to voice my concerns but the phone didn't work. When I did come down to reception, I had to wait over 10+ minutes for someone to finally show up on the desk (it was around 4 pm in the afternoon). Considering I paid in excess of $250 for the overnight stay I expected so much better. As a regular visitor to Newcastle I'll be avoiding Mercure Newcastle on all future trips. By the way how does Accor allow this hotel to be part of the group??

Check-in was super easy on the kiosk, as well as check out, however it let me check in & out without paying for my stay... I had to go to reception and ask if I could pay. The whole hotel is very outdated and doesn't seem like its being upkept well, then again it was just a cheap hotel for 1 night while we were in town. The bed was clean, however the bathroom had hair all in the tub, on the shower walls, in the sink, and the floor had definitely not been vacuumed or mopped, I felt like I couldn't shower till I went and bought disinfectant spray. Another very small issue but was really nasty, was that the toilet seat WOULD NOT stay open, so you quite literally had to hold the seat up while doing your business. Judging how the rest of the bathroom was "cleaned" you can imaging how nasty it felt to hold the toilet seat open constantly. The 1 staff member we interacted with was nice and accommodating, the parking is quite limited but I guess that's what you get in quite an accessible location. $16 for 1 night was an okay price too. Overall, I wouldn't stay again, which is disappointing as I've never had any issues with other Accor accommodations as a gold member.
