Lovely rooms and hotel overall. The spa was an issue with a woman two days in a row taking constant photos in the spa area. Please ask guests to respect everyone in the spa. This happened two days in a row with staff saying nothing. Other guests were also uncomfortable and I do not like guests taking photos of me in a spa without my consent. We stayed for this spa and unfortunately staff did not do anything and we left both times.

Dear Jesse, I'm sorry to hear that you have been inconvenienced without us taking the necessary steps to ensure your peace of mind. I really apologize for the inconvenience. Please do not hesitate to alert us should you experience this uncomfortable situation again. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Mondrian Bordeaux Les Carmes. 5 star hotel for the interior design and the staff - not for the food

For my thoughts regarding our stay at the Mondrian Hotel and our experience of the hotel’s restaurant, I think it’s important to provide some context. To experience the Mondrian Hotel is to be surrounded by precision, symmetry, and subtlety. The hotel's design is of the highest possible standard, with no line out of place. Everything about the hotel is exquisite, from the subtle light switches that require the slightest touch, the lines of the mirror in the room perfectly matching the vertical stitching lines in the blind, to the fire evacuation signs so beautifully designed that they could be stand-alone art pieces. Given the high-end design, having a Japanese restaurant made perfect sense. Japanese cuisine, like their culture, is famed for its subtlety, attention to detail, and high skill level. My partner is a huge fan of Japanese food and couldn’t wait for the meal I had booked for his birthday. The restaurant’s ambience was relaxed, and the staff were warm and friendly. We enjoyed two beautifully mixed cocktails before sitting down for our meal. For our starter, we had Wagu Beef Gyozas, Crab Croquettes, and Tacos, which the staff kindly switched to Tuna instead of Salmon. Everything was delicious and in keeping with the surroundings, beautifully presented… Then the main arrived. I had the tofu vegetarian option, which I enjoyed, and my partner had the Angry Chicken, which he didn’t enjoy - at all. And that’s putting it lightly. I watched as all the excited anticipation drained from his face when the dish arrived, the lid was removed, and the meal was revealed. In front of him were two large lumps of chicken, a chicken drumstick, complemented by some roughly cut vegetables and two new potatoes. This was not subtlety, attention to detail or in any way skilful. Compared to what I have mentioned about the hotel and restaurant, the meal’s presentation was vulgar and brutal. He described it as “Looking like someone has hacked up some vegetables, thrown them in the oven along with some pieces of chicken, took it out and poured some sauce over it.” The sauce I might add lacked any real spice and shouldn’t be titled Angry Chicken but should be renamed Slightly Annoyed Chicken instead. To make matters worse, the chicken was also poorly cooked. The larger lumps were dry, and the chicken drumstick, resplendent with its unappealing translucent skin, was undercooked. His enjoyment was made all the more impossible by being provided with a standard knife, which lacked the necessary serrations to cut through under and overcooked meat. He picked through one-third of the dish and then pushed it aside. When it came to collecting the plates, we expressed our disappointment to the waiter, who listened attentively and told us that he would pass the feedback to the Chef. As far as my partner was concerned, the meal had now been ruined, and all of the goodwill created by the incredible starters had been sullied. The final nail in the coffin was having to pay for what my partner described as possibly the worst meal that he had ever been put in front of him. As far as we were concerned, nobody should be asked to pay for something that bad. This was supposed to be the highlight of my partner’s birthday, and it turned out to be a huge disappointment, which upset me greatly. I feel I should also add that the plate on which the crab croquettes arrived was chipped. Something that should never happen in a restaurant of this standard. Last but not least, and not wanting to waste any more time on this, the breakfast in the hotel is below average. Pale sausages, lank, undercooked bacon, and stone-cold hash browns. Nothing special at all and worse than many lesser hotels, and once again, we were provided bowls containing poached eggs that were chipped. Many aspects of the Mondrian Hotel are five-star, the restaurant, however, is not one of them.

Beautiful property but a lot to fix to be a 5 star stay

Our stay at the Mondrian was quite disappointing. We have voiced our concerns to the room director who followed up with us very professionally and personally. I’ve shared a long email with recommendations I hope the hotel manager can implement in the near future. what we experienced is not what can be expected from a hotel of this standard. More than 1h30 passed check in time to access our room, overwhelmed reception staff who were left to fence on their own without much training with very frustrated guests. Housekeeping is hit and miss (handsoap missing, water bottle half used etc), breakfast service is also hit and miss (long wait for egg order, tables not clean etc). The only real 5 star service was the valet parking - thanks to Guilain and his team. The room is very nice, apart from some small maintenance issues (shower blinds don’t close properly, phone quick dial not working etc).

Dear Madam HM, Thank you for sharing your experience and recommendations with us. We have already discussed this subject and there are still areas for improvement. Business has been a little busier over the festive period, and I regret that we have not lived up to your expectations. Once again, my sincerest apologies. I hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you soon to the Mondrian Bordeaux Les Carmes for new adventures that I hope will delight and enchant you. Christine Bourgaux, Room Division Manager.
