Where do it start? Check in was ok. Got in to the room and it was stinking, the windows were left open, obviously to try and mask the smell. Turned on the TV, and the screen had a green tinge to it. Pillows were so high, they could break your neck. The air con was running and couldn't be turned off until someone came and did it somehow. Decided to kill some time and head to the gym, very basic, and not the newest of equipment, bizarrely no water to rehydrate yourself. After this I had to go to the bar to get some water. It was then food time, and my gut instinct was to order from Uber or Just Eat and downloaded the Apps to order, but against my gut, I thought I would give the restaurant a try. Big mistake! Arrived at the restaurant and waited for around 15 min to be shown to a table. The place only had about 15 people dining. I told the waiter that I know what I wanted to eat as soon as I sat down, as I had been staring at the menu whilst waiting to be seated, he said he would get his tablet to take the order. He went away and was not seen again until later when he showed others to their table and took their orders. I tried to catch the attention of other staff over the next 15 - 20 min, but no one was interested. I ended up spotting the original waiter in the bar, and I had to get up and confront him. "Do you remember me" I said, and his blank face made it obvious he didn't. "you sat me down at my table and said you would be right back to take my order". Still the blank face, and then an excuse about how busy it is tonight. He also said that it was someone else's job to do the order. Although he did eventually take the order. Meanwhile a friend arrived within about 5 min of my order being taken, and his order was taken straight away, and within 5 min his Burger and chips arrived. Still no sign of my food. After another 10 min, I had to ask, where is my food? Its just coming, they said. Another 5 min went past, and I saw 2 of them talking and looking at the tablet which they took the order on, and they both came over and asked what I had ordered. Noodles with Chicken, which they couldn't find the order. They had to order it again, and it took a further 15 min for it to arrive at the table, and the wait was not worth it. Flavorless, greasy, not very nice, but after all the time I had waited, I needed to eat something. Once finished, it took forever to get the bill. When the bill was being settled, I had to say to them, that its the worst experience I have had, and I wouldn't be eating dinner in there again. They didn't seem bothered, and a few of the other diners had noticed what was happening at my table and starting telling me about their own bad experience's. It seems I am not alone with this Fawlty Towers attitude. I went to bed, and the nights sleep was rubbish due to the largest pillows I have seen, and got up in the morning and thought I will give the Buffet breakfast a try, as there would be no staff to blame for any delays. I should have went to Greggs. The choice was rubbish, there was no fried eggs, the scrambled eggs had green watery liquid coming out of them. I just had to leave the place, and check out as quick as possible. If I never see this place again, it will be too soon.

Good: the room was clean and spacious, the bed comfortable and the shower excellent; most staff were polite, friendly and eager to help. Annoying: I had booked half-board and parking but the hotel system showed no meals booked and I had to forward the booking email which listed the details correctly. The room came equipped with a very nice coffee machine but ..... no pods. I asked at the desk and was initially told (rather patronisingly) that they were to be found in a wooden box next to the machine (not so), then that some would be sent up and (finally) that pods were 'off' (see below). The evening meal was advertised as 'three-course' but there was no indication that the cost was capped at £25 a head, at which price three courses were difficult A number of dishes listed on the menu were 'off' all three nights. On one evening my wife ordered a Teriyaki; the menu listed a number of vegetables in the dish but none was there. We queried this and, after checking with the chef, the waiter declared these vegetables also 'off'. One of the coffee machines in the restaurant was out of order all three days of our stay, a condition mentioned in a review from a few days earlier. The room safe came with elaborate instructions for resetting the code but there was no power. I asked at the desk to be told that the safe was key operated. The key was however nowhere to be found. It was discovered eventually. Really? I don't feel that I should have to pay for parking when I stay in a hotel. There was no loo brush in the bathroom!! The toilet paper was the thinnest that I have ever seen; pointless economy for obvious reasons.

Room was barely acceptable, toilet was cracked, and I could hear the plumbing all night long. I didn't bother changing rooms as they all looked and sounded the same. Breakfast was probably the worst I have had in any Accor hotel. I am still trying to resolve the PARKING FINES I received due to the Hotel not entering my paid car parking dates correctly and I this resulted in AU$500 worth of additional Car Hire admin Fees. The experience in total was awful. I should have stayed in the City at the Marriott, it would have been cheaper and better in the long run.

Disappointing for leisure travellers

I stayed one night at Mercure Cardiff North and unfortunately had a poor experience. The restaurant was especially disappointing – I waited over an hour for a pappardelle dish which arrived as cubes of very tough, inedible beef in tomato sauce, nothing resembling the standard recipe. I had to reorder, and while the replacement chicken tikka was satisfactory, my husband had already finished his meal by the time it arrived. The waiter was apologetic but unable to do more. Later that evening, I had to complain about the noise from a large school group at 11pm, which added to the sense of a restless stay. The hotel appears to cater mainly for contractors and groups, with a very functional dining area and little commitment to creating a welcoming experience for leisure travellers. Road noise is also constant, and the location has nothing of interest within walking distance. While the rooms are serviceable, overall this hotel has very little appeal for tourists, and I regret booking it. If travelling for tourism, I would suggest looking elsewhere.
