Staff were amazing, friendly and super helpful. I had evening meal, and breakfast which was really good and fantastic selection of food. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back.

Service was good. It's a shame that the windows are screwed shut. Notwithstanding the fact that there is air conditioning, it's always better to have access to fresh air, especially if the air con fails for any reason. Slightly disappointed that the floor and table lamps have not been put back as it makes the executive rooms look much less spartan.

Dear John, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review! We’d like to clarify that the windows are not sealed shut, they can be opened slightly from the top, which is a safety feature in place for our guests’ wellbeing. We are glad that you enjoyed our service during your stay. We appreciate your comments regarding the room lighting and understand how the absence of floor and table lamps may affect the overall feel of the space. Your feedback has been noted and will be shared with the relevant team for review. We hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a more comfortable experience in the future. Sincerely, Reception

Reception staff helpful and friendly. Hotel was well situated. Room was spacious and comfortable. Disappointed that the swimming pool wasn't free. £20 for 2 people a bit steep if all you want is a half hour or so.

Hi Amanda, We very much appreciate your comments regarding your stay at the Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel. It is always a pleasure to receive positive feedback. I will share your comments with our team. I am sure that this feedback will serve as an encouragement to all of our staff as we strive to continuously improve the quality of our services. We are sorry to hear you were charged for the swimming pool, since December 2025 we have removed the additional charges for any of the Leisure Club facilities that is including the pool charge for our guests. We are sorry for the misunderstanding and are hoping to welcome you back soon. Thank you again for sharing your experience. Sincerely, Reception

We came back after a stay which wasn't great because the location of the hotel and the accessibility is fabulous. The only niggle we had this time is we reported the TV as not working on the 24th PM, on the 25th the TV was looked at and then the remote control was taken. Reception said they would get it sorted whilst we were out. It never resurfaced after another query with reception. Luckily my disabled mum had me with her as I could get some downtime with her using my iPad. Not idea and no explanation provided on check out as to why this would happen. Its such a shame. We do want to come back again later this year.

Dear Emma, Thank you for your review, we appreciate your feedback. We apologise for any disruptions caused throughout your stay and we will pass this onto relevant departments to ensure we can prevent this for future stays. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the Mercure Southgate Hotel. Best Wishes, Reception

Tariq R. Business - Confirmed reviews ALL

The service and staff were excellent and very helpful, as the often are. The location is excellent, central but away from the noisy streets and shops. However, this is a premium brand hotel, not a cheap hotel. The rooms have for many years not been upgraded or refurbished. The quality of the rooms is poor. Worse - the sound proofing is terrible. Some windows don't shut properly (an old lady told me at breakfast). I've stayed several times and the doors don't even close with huge gaps that allow light and sound. Some rooms have really poor walls separating rooms so you can hear even quiet conversation and other noises (!). A new development is that hey now charge £16 to park as a resident. This is a DISGRACE. This was never done before, and this is simply greedy profiteering. The hotel prices are high enough already. It leaves a terrible taste in the mouth. If there was a better option I would never come back here, but sadly I do because there isn't a better option - but that could change. Am I setting unrealistic expectations? No. I've been staying at hotels for work travel for 30 years and know what "average" is and what to expect from a non-cheap branded hotel. Breakfast is merely ok. Cheap and basic. Doesn't enhance your experience at all. What I'd expect at a cheap-brand hotel. I also booked well ahead and asked for a quiet room not facing the street on an upper floor, and also an "Accessible" room. This is not what happened and I had to fight to get this changed. I'll finish on a positive. The staff are almost always helpful and professional. But they do feel almost ashamed of these issues.

Dear Tariq, Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback following your recent stay with us. We are very sorry to learn that several aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. We appreciate you bringing these concerns to our attention and our maintenance and management teams are reviewing them carefully so that we can address any issues that may be affecting guest comfort. We truly value the loyalty of guests such as yourself who have chosen to stay with us multiple times over the years. We are sorry that this visit left you feeling disappointed and we hope we will have the opportunity to restore your confidence in a future stay.
