Good location, but disappointing stay.

One of the main reasons we chose this hotel was the swimming pool, but we found that the hotel allowed far too many people at a time in the swimming pool area for comfortable Covid-19 social distancing, so we came out after less than 10 minutes. The room, reception service and breakfast were fine, but the dinner menu had been significantly reduced from the one on your website, so neither of us ended up with the meal we expected, and were both disappointed with our enforced revised choices. The fire alarm went off for several bursts of several seconds each from about 6:55 am on our second (final) morning. As it did not continue, it appeared that it was a false alarm, but I decided to call reception to make sure. At this point I realised that there was no phone in the room - presumably as a Covid-19 precaution, so I had to find and re-read the letter given to us on check-in, to find the external number to ring, to speak to reception. They confirmed that the alarm had been caused by an engineer working on the system of the adjacent Ibis hotel, so the alarm hadn't even applied to our room! We received an apology, but our planned sleep-in after our short break had been blasted to smithereens! I feel that it would have been better if the lack of phone, and the external contact numbers for the various services, had been notified to customers on a notice left in all the bedrooms, rather than relying on a letter which could easily get mislaid during the course of a stay. Also, although most people have mobile phones nowadays, some don't, so there should also be notification of how to contact reception if you cannot call the external number for any reason.

As an Accor Gold Member and used to great customer care - Novotel Reading didn't disappoint!! Super location in heart of Reading so lots of choice for evening eating/entertainment and with Legoland and Thorpe Park only 35mins drive away. The room was clean, the swimming pool was fantastic and the breakfast buffet was superb for me and my 2 boys (12yr and 14yr) - they loved the choice and the pancake maker machine. Best part of stay was the customer service. Breakfast room staff were super attentive, always ensuring we had all we needed. This is the important part.... parking is Reading is a challenge especially if like me you have a high sided vehicle > 2.1m. I had parked in the Cattle Market open air car park, only to be told by a very helpful local bus driver that there had been many break-ins in the last month, so I decided to move my vehicle however the only place I could find which had spaces and no height restriction in all of Reading was the Novotel but all spaces were taken. That's when the 2 amazing receptionists (one on each day of my stay) pulled out al the stops and managed to get me a space for both nights. Sadly I didn't get the name of the first receptionist (she was Italian) and her colleague also Italian was called Lorena, but I want to say a massive thank you to you both as you removed what could have been a real problem and kept my vehicle safe. So the hotel was superb and the staff could not have done more 5 star !!

Quick and efficient check in. Was given room request of higher floor away from lift, which was perfect, good view over Reading but very quiet. Room was very comfortable with plenty of space. Comfortable bed for a good night's sleep. All amenities were sealed in bags for extra protection. Bloothtooth connected speaker for own music was a welcome bonus. Breakfast was very well organised, with sealed continental items to pick and hot buffet served to your plate. A most enjoyable stay and good protection measures.

Check in was quick and easy, was told we need to pre book the pool but when we turned up it was crowded so it seemed pointless to book a session, steam room was closed and we weren’t made aware of this on check in, room was satisfactory but the bathroom was dated, staff were helpful and welcoming

I enjoyed my stay, but I think it could be clearer - upon booking - that the car park is available for £18 for 24 hours, and not free. As I booked directly through the Accor website, I would have expected this to be made clear.

I had phoned before arrival to ask about parking- I was told parking could not be reserved/ The check in was off hand/ could not have cared less/ no parking/ no help with parking/ had had call directing us to a car park 10mins walk away- not ideal/ lifts not working/ not a great experience at all

I fully appreciate that two of our lifts not working cased some inconvenience. This was a really unfortunate timing during a busy weekend. The lifts were fixed on Monday, but I realise it is too late. Regarding the staff service, I am concerned that you found the check-in "off hand". Our car park is very limited in terms of spaces and we have a car park nearby (650 m) that we recommend to our guests. Was this offered to you before/during check-in? What made you feel like the receptionist "couldn't care less"? We hope that this experience will not deter you from staying with us again in the near future.
